So i traveled to san jose and brought my 445 on the plane in my carry on. now mind you, it is in a flashlight host... but either way i wasn't stressed. and no, i did not use it on the plane LoL. But if it was a night time flight i surely would have thought about it LoL. just in case you are wondering why i brought it.... I use it to point out conduit with copper wire on demolition sites.

Were I to take a class IV laser on a plane, I'd remove the batteries first to stop any curious TSA agent or other official from doing anything silly. If asked, I'd just say "It's a laser pointer" or "It's a laser tool for amateur astronomy."

.......so do you mean you would have thought about shining it out the window of the plane if it was a night flight ?

That would be an interesting sight if it could be seen from the ground, any idea how it would have looked from ground level ?

Pointing it straight out the plane window (if nothing is in sight in that direction of course) would be better than pointing it towards the ground if you are not sure if it would cause any problems to people on the ground.

Anyhow, pointing it straight out the window, would it be visible to someone on the ground who happened to be looking in the sky at that time ?

(If so, I wonder what they would think seeing a laser beaming horizonitally out from a plane :D)
 
I'd worry about a dangerous level of reflection coming off the little acrylic window.
 
I took my WL S3 Arctic from SLC to Denver last week in my carry-on luggage, still in the box and they didn't say anything either.
 
...just to add to this, I took 2 200mw 'obvious looking laser pointer' greenies internationally from chicago to london recently. I also brought them on my carry on (laptop bag) when traveling but they were stored 'disassembled' and I had no batteries in the bag juuust in case TSA or whoever might've decided to question me on it.

There and back, through international customs during a 'high terrorist alert' time, nobody ever asked me anything. I believe taking them apart & storing them without any batteries was key :)

I'd be a little more nervous about melting the acrylic window than I would be getting a reflection. Make sure to do it on final approach. If the cabin loses pressure you are already there and won't miss your flight time waiting for another plane ^_^
 
Like Zeroignite said, reflections off the inner acrylic and outer glass window would be dangerous to you and the other passengers.
And remember, the pilots are sitting up on the flight deck in a low light environment.
If they happen to be looking in the right direction, they'd see it.
You don't want a pissed off pilot looking for you.
