They're here! - MOD38s, 3.8mm diode

Re: They're here! - MOD38s, 3.8mm diode 12mm modules - Orders Open

Alright guys, got all your orders, and i'm going to start packaging up in a few hours. Depending on timing, I may not get to the post office until around 7pm tonight (8 hours from time of this post). So I'll leave the PP links up until right before then. I know there are a few stragglers who asked if they could swing a payment in later (than last night). So I'll leave the PP links up until I head to the post office.

Glad to see the interest in these! I've almost covered half the fabrication price already. So I'm sure that with the remaining modules up on eBay for a few months, I'll be able to cover my costs and at least break even - which is exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks everyone!

Update - So, I didn't get these out until tonight. Why?

eMachineShop isn't as much of a perfectionist as I am (apparently). As I packaged them up on Monday, I found a few modules that I wasn't impressed with. I decided that every single module needed to be checked by digital caliper before shipping.

I'm glad I've gone that route. I'm discarding any modules with a tolerance that puts the diode pocket under ~3.60 mm (they're designed to be 3.64mm), and any where both acrylic and metal lenses don't thread smoothly. I've rejected about 30% of the modules.

The upside, is that I feel a lot better knowing that each module is within the tolerances I intended, and that all of the threads work. I'm even including an acrylic lens with each module. I have no clue what I'll do with my rejects. I'll probably use them as focus adapters ;)

But that's why I was delayed two days in shipping. It wasn't because I was lazy - it was a QC thing. EMS is clearly not as anal about this stuff as I had hoped.

Wow, Rhd...
I appreciate all of the extra time you have invested.
That stinks about the mods that are out of spec.
What tolerances did EMachine agree to be within?

Well, 0.05mm is only off by about 1.5%. They actually have a much larger default tolerance than 1.5%, so it's really not that bad that I had to filter out some that were 0.05mm smaller than designed. What pisses me off a lot more than the fact that I've had to toss a few parts for the diode pocket measurements, is that I've had to toss a few parts for the threading of the M9x0.5 lens. There should be no way for a screwed up lens thread to make it through to me.

BUT, that said, I'm not usually on this side of the equation. It may be that in the process of manufacturing Aixiz modules, 30% of them fail QC check too. I don't think that would be the case - but I don't know. Maybe this is normal. Maybe you always want to factor in ~30% overage for defects. Live and learn.

eMachineShop actually screwed up quite a bit. They took 3 weeks longer than they should of, and then they ignored my specific instruction to use only USPS shipping. Instead they used UPS, which cost about an extra $100, and also incurred stupidly unreasonable "brokerage fees" that USPS wouldn't have charged. I'm not crazy about eMachineShop, but I also don't know of ANY alternatives. I would *love* to do a focus adapter run, on my own (not like the botched StevieDezie groupbuy).

It's also not something anyone needs to feel bad about. If the remaining modules sell on eBay over the next 6 months, I'll end up recovering the cost of making this, and maybe even profiting $50 (I've got them listed for a lot more on eBay than I sold them for here). The objective here was just to get a bunch of these out there. And remember, my lead time was really poor - I had to order this at the very beginning of December. Back then, I didn't have the benefit of knowing that Pontiac was going to come through with a supply of 3.8mm modules for Aixiz. My objective was to get something out there so that we could all start using some of those single-mode Reds, Blues, and Greens (that I sort of new were about to pop up).

RHD, would you be interested in selling the off-spec modules for a cheaper price? I'd buy 1 of them if so.

Nope. I don't want bad versions of anything I've made (or had made) floating around out there.

I understand your concern behind why you don't want to sell a bad version of it, but I asked for one, and you're not selling them to unknowing customers.

It'd be for me and me only; It wouldn't hurt your reputation as a parts dealer. :)

They were $6 dude ;)

I'm always looking for a good deal :D

Are they shipped yet ? I have interest in your IR diode in the other thread.

Re: They're here! - MOD38s, 3.8mm diode 12mm modules - Orders Closed

They have - but honestly, before anyone jumps on purchasing an IR diode, I need to make sure I still know where they are.

It has been a while since I've maintained that thread, and I know that I've used a couple of the diodes myself - so I really need to revisit that and figure out what's still around.

Re: They're here! - MOD38s, 3.8mm diode 12mm modules - Orders Closed

got my MOD38's today :)

they look nice rhd!

Now im going to work to find some random airline fittings for any where between 2.5 - 3.5mm!
or "drill me a hole in a chunk of something and mash it together in the vice"

I did use the back of a aixiz module to mash a SmOC (small open can) red LD into the MOD38.... pitty the thing starts to dim at 150mA lool cannon fodder i say.

Lol, glad you like them!

Admittedly, it's tough to find appropriate presses for this size. Someone will probably have to make a few for us eventually ;)

Re: They're here! - MOD38s, 3.8mm diode 12mm modules - Orders Closed

Yea, I got them yesterday. Thanks voor de extra lenses. I needed some, the plastic threads wear out fast in the metal aixiz module.

As for the press tool find a plat metal bar and drill a small hole in, just enough for the pins of the 3.8mm diode. Then put the module on it and press it.

I received mine yesterday as well.
I can't wait to press my new OSRAM 450 into one. :).

Re: They're here! - MOD38s, 3.8mm diode 12mm modules - Orders Closed

Glad you guys like them! Every module you guys get, should be perfect - since I went over each one with a caliper.

I'm glad that I've been holding on to those acrylic lenses over the years, because they came in handy. Before putting the acrylics in, I confirmed that a metal M0x0.5 would fit also.

And remember that the pocket may not completely "eat" the whole diode. There may be a fraction of a mm above flush. So the diode won't completely "recess" the way it does with an Aixiz 5.6mm. Just be aware of that.

Also, remember that aluminum is softer than brass. It conducts heat better, but the trade-off is that it's relatively easy to damage, unlike brass. This doesn't really matter, since it's going into a heatsink, but be aware that if you slip with a tool during the pressing process, you could fairly easily nick up the external surface of the module.
