ThermoElectric Coolers (TECs)

I am sure he will be relisting them when his auctions end in a few days. I will be watching and will post in this thread, unless someone else notices before I do.
 
A thermoelectric cooler configuration whereby one cooler is mechanically STACKED on top of another so as to be thermally in series. This arrangement makes it possible to reach lower temperatures than can be achieved with a single-stage cooler.

Well I had a great long post asking the best way to power these peltiers but I made the mistake of trying to post links showing some new models on ebay and some small video board heatsinks that I found that might work great on these little gizmos.  I don't have rights to post links 'cause I am new apparently and my post got dropped in the bit bucket.  So here is the short version:

Find similar peltiers eBay item number: 160149587356
Find some small heatsinks eBay item number: 330158346386
Should I replicate the LD circuit to power the peltier?  Seems like temperature feedback would be better.
 
i don't think you SHOULD use the LM317, as peltiers tend to draw ALOT of power, and the LM317 would heat up very fast. and also remember, the larger(power) the peltier, the bigger the heat sink will have to be.
 
I saw that peltier too and I don't think there is a huge difference. But if you can wait a few days, there is a good chance he will relist the ones we bought.

I am almost certain you will need a bigger heat sink. As soon as I receive the second peltier I ordered, I can try it with that type of heat sink. I have some I plan to pull off of an old motherboard.

I did use Daedal's circuit to power the TEC and have had excellent results. It only draws 200ma's at most to keep the diode cool, so I know the heat sink I am currently using is an overkill. But it makes for a nice stable platform for mounting everything onto it.
 
oh ok gazoo! i was thinking about if he was wanting to run the TEC at high power, the LM317 will explode! ;D

It's ok things...I know you are used to working with much bigger peltiers.. ;D These are tiny, I was surprised when I received the first one how small it was. But they are very effective.
 
i wouldn't mind playing with smaller peltiers, it would be fun! although my local jaycar doesn't have them in stock, so i have to order them online :(

Here is a pic of the peltier with the two LM317T's heat sinked and the smaller of the Aizix modules glued to the peltier:

i think your heatsink is a bit small? ;D ;D ;D ;D nice work! i'm thinking about turning my GB diode into a labby, and adding a TEC might be nessesary?
 
I won't be able to verify until I get my meter. But it does seem to put out a little more power when cooled. Besides, small peltiers are fun to play with anyway.. ;D ;D ;D
 
There is a fan right at the bottom of the heat sink. If I up the voltage to it's maximum rating of 5 volts, then the heat sink does begin to get hot. Note the current is only a little over an amp when run at 5 volts. But with the fan running, even at a very slow speed, the heat sink stays cool. Of course running it at 200ma's requires no fan and the heat sink block does not even get warm.
 
That heatsink is plenty enough. :D It looks real nice though. It makes me want to copy the same design. ::) Nice work Gazoo.

I got the peltiers I ordered yesterday and... DAMN! This thing is COLD! I compared it to one of the peltiers I had before with the same specs but not stacked... THIS THING IS GREAT! :D
