The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - ....Now 209mW's!

Re: The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - 130mW's... Schweet!

what is the black plastic you are referring to on the aixiz acrylic? I bought the pre-installed diode in aixiz module from stonetek, does SenKat remove this plastic for you?

Not sure if Greg cuts the plastic away. I doubt it, because then it is not new anymore. Just look at the back of the lens. You want to carefully cut away the black plastic, in order to enlarge the aperture. This allows more light to get to the lens. Also, in the high power red builds, the black plastic will melt if it is not cut away. It would be easy to 'slip' and scratch the acrylic lens. Here is a picture of before and after...

Aside from the money. What would I need to learn, tools to buy, etc. to make my own. I understand you have to harvest from a PS3 or blueray DVD. And what in the heck does "open can" mean? You guys rock!

Re: The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - 130mW's... Schweet!

You would need to learn to build a driver or use an LED flashlight with one inside. Open can diodes basically are that all the internal components of the diode are left open instead of a protective shell. Jayrob, thanks for the awesome pictures! Will i get any sort of increase in power?

Check this thread for the open can diodes.

Yes, you will get more power by cutting the black plastic away. It will depend on the diode/current as to how much power you will gain. I tested a Sony/Senkat diode at 294mA's and saw a difference of about 20mW's. I would guess there would more of a difference with an open can diode @ 420mA's. I have not tested the blu-ray builds.

That's a great link that chido posted there. You can see that he has shown close up pictures of 'canned' diodes, and open can diodes. Look for the 'Sticky' - Basic FAQ's at the top of these different thread subjects for some useful links and help on getting started:

jayrob, have u tested the wavelength you achieved?

PD: will you start selling these babies ;)?

I do not have a way to measure the wavelength. But it must be 405nm - 408nm. Take a look at this information about blu-rays from Sony:
http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/pro/laser_diode/blu_ray.html

Visually, the color is the same as the PS3 blu-ray. As can be seen from my beam comparison pictures at the top of this thread:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1207011306/0

As far as selling these builds, I would think that until the price of the drives come down, the price would be too high.
Using the Meredith glass module, the heatsink, and the 6 X drive, the parts alone are over $400 dollars!

If a guy were to make a mistake on the harvest, that's $300 down the drain!

I think that the parts would be cheaper by putting this LD into a Kenom barrel. No Meredith glass lens, but you would still get 90mW's to 100mW's with an acrylic lens at 100mA's.

If Kenom would do this build in one of his AWESOME barrels for less that $500 using a boost circuit, like drlava did, that would be the ticket! See what Kenom said here:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1208622808#2
Heck for that price, I'll buy one from you Kenom!

The guy who sells these lives about 45 minutes away from me. I've talked to Will several times on the phone. I'm supposed to hook up with him to take a look at what he has.

I believe this diode is much like a 2 X writer harvest. But, I haven't got to try one out yet. He was going to build a laser out of one, and let me measure the output. Still waiting for him to contact me again.

For all we really know, it may be the same as the 6 X diodes! Hey Will, I'll bet if we ask drlava to do a graph on one of your diodes. He would probably be happy to do so.

His graph would tell the story! If it is like the 6 X diodes, his graph would sell your diodes too.

thanks jay, always so informative :)

well then i will wait till i have more money and the prices drop down (a lot of time)

cant get any better than what you did ;)

Re: The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - 130mW's... Schweet!

May I ask where you purchased the 130mw blue ray diode and how much did it cost? I have done some technically challenging mechanical work and think I could pull these off(with the cash of course).

Thanks for those compliments! I've got plans for fitting a Meredith glass module into one of Kemom's barrels using my lathe to modify the top piece. That barrel of his is awesome. Might not even mess with it. That thing is total eye candy.

Make sure you check all of those links that I have listed there. They contain 'key' information for anybody who will be harvesting one of these diodes...

I love your antique lathe. I've had my eye on a chinese made one for $300. Same size as yours.

can't wait till u start spawning these beasts!!

Realistically, it will probably be a while before selling this particular build. I would think if the price of the drive were to come down to $150 or so. I mean, if someone bought the drive, and then wanted me to build it, that's different. But that's not cool to have someone take the chance of me killing their diode either!

Saw that huh? It's a Craftsman (Atlas) 6". I got it in parts at the Flee Market about 10 years ago for only $250 bucks! The guy swore it was all there. He wasn't lying. It's in perfect condition, gears for threading and everything...
