Tesla Coil Build Thread

oneTesla up and running. People have had to do some tuning to theirs due to out of tune secondary's but mine seems to be doing ok. Looking to borrow a scope to check it though before I run it at full power. This is 50%

fuck me that was quick! spose your in the US and im waiting on parts they didnt include :(

great job

I did blow the hct14 when I put the 5V VR in the 15V spot and vice versa. So I hade to order a new one. I had everyrhing I needed in the kit. What are you waiting on?

i had to wait on diodes primary wire, the toroid, the ground wire and fiber cable.

Sounds familiar. I built an LED driver kit a few months ago and swapped an NPN and a PNP on a push-
pull. There was a 50/50 shot of getting it right and those odds are never in my favor.

Very nice work. Yep, little flubs always are around the corner in this field. I once soldered up a MOSFET thinking the pinout was the same as a BJT. Couldn't figure out why it kept blowing. I needed more sleep.

(GDS =/= BCE, it's often CBE)

I'm loving how I have this set up with the tubes in the background. My friends still believe I have the bottom of these lights wired to the coil and that's why you can't see the bottom.......

Nicely done. I still want to get one of those. I usually get some money from my parents for Christmas and if I do again this year I know what I'll be buying. That storage case you made is pretty damned sweet too.

Nice DRSSTC speedy :D ,

Just a roandome thing , but today I had ago at seeing what my primary current was in my miniature SSTC .

using a CT of 1:50 ( 50 secondary turns ) , the one turn is one wire from the H bridge . using a 10 Ohms burden resistor , for every 1 amp in the primary I get 0.2 Volts across the resistor .

Now at full power I am getting a voltage of 5 Volts Pk-Pk , so I have 12.5 amps flowing in each direction on my primary O.o ! , 25 amps peak to peak , Considering it draws under 5 amps from the mians .

Here is a scop shot of the output from my PLL ic and the primary current ( in Blue ) , there is a 90* phase shift .

Here are a few videos of my SGTC builds.
my small 3.25" TC gave 60" sparks at 2.5KVA input.
6.25" TC is capable of doing +90" (96" so far) with 4.5KVA input. 12Kv @ 360-380mA.

enjoy the videos

These videos are all of my largest coil in action (~5 years ago).

In a few weeks this coil is being worked on and upgraded to work on an 3KVA rated instrumentation Potential XMFR.
It is a 120:1 ratio unit (14400:120), which means it needs a variac at to run 12KV.

A little info on these interesting transformers, these are non-oil (epoxy) filled transformers used in precise measurements
at substations and distribution centres. They are non-shunted and as such need large current limiting on their primaries,
such as a buzz box arc welder or similar. These MUST only be used on 120V or you'll over saturate them.
If you want 240, you'll require 2 of these units or some way of
converting 240Vac to a single phase.

oneTesla got a new primary today.

Started with a bigger base. I went from the vertical coil to a horizontal one.

Here is the primary spacers glued to the center the was originally the primary former. Each notch is slightly further away than the last so it is a nice spiral.

It was originally coated grounding wire that I stripped off. I left the part from the bridge to the first turn coated so it wouldn't arc over and short out.

String ring just in case

I'm seeing slightly better results. Still have to mess around with the tuning some to find that sweet spot.
