Taking apart a 9V

I heard someplace that some 9V batteries have AAAA batteries inside (link), so I figured I'd try it with a dead 9V from my multimeter.

I got a little bit more of a surprise than seeing AAAA's:

Stacked "Dry" cells. 6x1.5V=9V

Don't pay attention to the cells - look at the brand(s).
 
Most 9V batteries contain 6 AAAAs , I have some lying on my desk just now. But yeah energizer ;D

Thats really odd, i wouldn't expect that on the inside.

I took apart a 9V once and there was like 6 tubes inside of it, i still have them in a draw.
 
There are 2 main constructions for 9V blocks - with cylindric AAAA cells, or with rectangular cells as in the picture above.

The rectangular configuration is actually better since it wastes less space (normally between the AAAA cells). Rechargeable 9V blocks are often built like this too, the better ones with 7 or 8 cells in them to get 8.4 or 9.6 nominal volts instead of 7.2 from six.

Also interesting how they flipped a (probably misprinted) sheet of energizer container to make this battery - at least we can be sure they are from the same factory, though that doesnt mean the same quality by a long shot.
 
Kipkay has a video about taking apart a 12V. I think it had something like 4 5$ button cells inside. :o
 
energizer....seems that it is a recycled/recharged energizer battery sold as a cheaper/lower quality battery..
 
i'm waiting for someone to try this on a real car battery. oh yeah, there is a suprise in it alright. [smiley=evil.gif]

The "inside" says A23, 12 V - the same battery KipKay is referring to. The A23 is a lot smaller, so this battery had to be made from a sheet of the packaging, not from old batteries.
 
Haha, very finny video. ;D If you opened it like they did I'm pretty sure acid would go everywhere. :o Not sure though.
 
Here almost all batteries are made of AAAAs, even the Duracell ProCell (industrial). I've only had one B-brand that contained very tightly packed blocks, but the blocks were so chic and high quality that the thick transparent plastic walls of the blocks nullified the gain in space.

And yes, if you open a batter sideways like they did, sulfuric acid will likely spill out. But if you open it rightside up, it would be fine (with every battery I've encountered, at least). You can pop it open and see the liquid in it, no problem. In fact, it is often recommended that you top-off the water level with distilled water now and again (newer batteries might not require this, and therefore might not be so easily openable, or might not have caps to remove at all). But remember, it is sulfuric acid and lead inside, neither of which are friendly. Wear gloves, wash your hands, etc. Also wear old clothes, you might not even notice slight splashes, but a small splash can put 1000 tiny holes in your clothes. I've ruined several pairs of jeans that way from topping off similar deep-cycle batteries.
