Ok, I finally got around to measuring how much current I was feeding the PHR-803T diode at the time of death: 195ma

Reason: The Dr. Lava driver I was using, I thought was the low-range 32-150ma driver. Well, it wasn't. I measured it under load (using dead bluray diode) up and beyond 400ma. So, my assumption that I couldn't overdrive the PHR because I was using the "low range" driver did my diode in.

On a good note, I don't have to wait for a high range driver for my LG 22x project. Turns out I've had one all along!

There ya go people 195ma. I'd say it was working reliably up until about 150ma with no problems.

and just a few hours after my first post in this thread.....I have successfully finished my LG 22X DVD burner project. Running nicely in the same flashlight housing at 400ma. It's a beast, I have no idea what the output is, but it's way brighter than my WL Pulsar, by far.

It sure does! You never know if that diode is going to light up the first time current passes through it after the torture of extraction. Such a great feeling when it comes to life!!

Hey guys, a note about this: the blu-range drivers can go up to about 300-400mA if you turn the pot all the way up. They were rated to 150mA because that is the max current that is easy to adjust it to. Much higher, and the current changes too fast with a tiny adjustment of the pot. As it says in the instructions, set the current using a dummy load before attaching the real thing! :) this will save you from acidentally overdriving your laser. If you want to adjust it with the diode attached, make as small as possible adjustments and measure the current after each one.
