Suddenly I own a ULS-25E

So to my utter surprise the whole thing actually works perfectly. Looks like whoever came in and told them the laser was dead was just trying to scam them or something. Not that I mind..

So all I need is to fix the slop in the X axis, tension the belts, and then 3D print some mirror mounts and get some new mirrors. Having to buy two mirrors and that's the total cost of a laser cutter repair? Not bad..

So.. did what I set out to!

it beeps at me when I try vector things...

might be because im trying to do lines with vectors. Special programs with special formats needed??

A lot of companies do not use removable optics... so you may need to break the lens and clean it up, then reglue a new one to the sled. If you buy a new one I would suggest a 1.5" focal length lens for very fine intricate engraving/cutting. But for general purpose cutting go with a 2" or a 2.5".

How are the mirrors? Top mount mirror is probably fked... how are the other 2?

I just wanted to mention that ZnSe dust is incredibly hazardous and toxic when inhaled. I would suggest if you were going to break this material to do it outside away from people and animals while wearing a respirator/dust mask. I would also discard any clothing that may be contaminated with dust as well.

On topic this is a very nice laser! I'm happy to see it didn't go in the dumpster! Nice find! :beer:
 
thankfully the two ZnSe mirrors were not even with the unit and the lens is removable and cleanable. =)
 
Ditto. That's news to me of the ZnSe toxicity. Though, Se isn't very nice stuff so it isn't outlandish.
 
I have always heard that ZnSe is NASTY stuff. I always handle
mine carefully and wash my hands after.
That MSDS sheet indicates to me that you don't
want to grind or file on it. I always handle on the edges
just like any good quality lens.

I suspect (as I noted earlier) that it is based on Selenium exposure, especially given the only hazards listed on the MSDS is that of inhalation. When I worked summers in the family chem lab as a pre-teen I once spilled 50g or so of Se powder on my lab coat. Just held my breath and patted myself off outside. C'est la vie. Back in those days we used to set up a UV lamp behind a bowl full of mercury and watch the vapors block the UV, heh.
