So to my utter surprise the whole thing actually works perfectly. Looks like whoever came in and told them the laser was dead was just trying to scam them or something. Not that I mind..
So all I need is to fix the slop in the X axis, tension the belts, and then 3D print some mirror mounts and get some new mirrors. Having to buy two mirrors and that's the total cost of a laser cutter repair? Not bad..
