Spartan Series 50mW Orange Handheld Laser: $599.99

589nm ain't what I'd call "orange." ;)

I have seen two of these, Dr_Evil will soon receive the second, both were rated 10 mW by CNI the first was close, but the second is doing 50 mW

Is Dragon Lasers reputable?

IE - if their lasers aren't up to spec, will they do something about it?
Excuse my ignorance, I know nothing about their reputation.

Ok - I'm sold (well not actually SOLD SOLD)

But that's my new goal. That's my target. That's the "YELLOW" my signature line has been pining after ;)

I'm with you on that rhd. After this HL63133DG and a jetlasers green, that exact 50mW 589 is my goal. I've seen 473, and although it is wonderful, and mine is only around 12mW, I can't justify getting a higher powered 473 before 589 due to low cost of 445. It's definitely no comparison, but yellow is
What I NEED!

Jake....argh - If by fluke your HL63133DG gets here before mine, you've gotta at least let me do the first reveal... :) Pretty please?

Haha - I wouldn't actually hold you to that. Where's yours at so far anyway? You have the Fedex # ?

No, francesco from PL( same dude you got yours from right?) he is busy, and leaving for a laser scanner festival or something like that at the beginning of next week, so I have to wait until he returns to even place my order. I just have an indefinite hold on one of them for me as soon as he gets back!

So you will definitely have the first reveal. Are you thinking 300mA like I am or what?

EDIT: francesco will be gone for the "Prolight and sound trade show"

I am. In fact, I think I'm going to do 315ma (or something like that - I was playing with the 1.25/X, and some common resistor value gave me a nice 315).

I'm torn on the IC to use. Going to linearly regulate it - I don't trust anyone else's driver for this! I'm not sure whether an LM1117 will have enough wiggle room. These diodes take a max of 3.2V. I can't remember if the LM1117 has a smaller voltage drop at low current like 300mA (such that a 4V battery supply would be good enough).

If all else fails, I may just use 2x16340s and build an LM317 driver if you can believe it ;)

I'm sure it would - but I don't like or trust either of those drivers. I've owned exactly 1 flexdrive and exactly 1 microboost. The microboost was sketchy, so I ordered the next one, the flexdrive, preset. It was DOA.

I'm eeked out by the idea of a pot setting my current for an expensive diode. For something like this - I know exactly what I want my max current to be, and I like knowing that a linear IC design is never going to allow any more current that the resistor tells it is ok. I just trust the setup more.

I hear ya, I'll probably just use one of my spare flex's laying around, and put hot glue over the pot once I have it set to 300-310mA to keep it in place.

And I didn't thoroughly check the diode data sheet, you say these can only take 3.2V max??

I forget exactly - but I think that was their max voltage.

If I am able to pull off a GB for them in a month or so once I get to my new location, I think I will try to build into the price breakdown a single "murder diode". Probably wouldn't even want to do that myself, but rather have an "elder" of the forum, hehe, take responsibility for killing it, while in a hefty heatsink.

It might be that these can take 500mA, but nobody tries it because of the $200+ price tag.
