Sound card DAC tutorial






Welcome Tyler - Throughout the project I took a TON of photos and made a list of notes / links where I purchased every item from. I learned a lot while doing this and I would be happy to pass it on so you don't made some of the same mistakes I did like ordering unnecessary items. At work now but if you PM me later I could send you my notes...
 
lookin great paul.... great song choice too. i just saw kaskade recently in LA. i have all my parts except the actual usb sound card. damn delivery from china.

how much heat do all the components put out? would me powdercoating my aluminum table be negative?

I don't recommend having any coating between the heatsink(s) of your laser/galvo block and the baseplate except for possibly some AS5 compound.

some thermal grease would probable be cool

anyone ever used those TECs to cool?

The mini green "lab" laser I have in my RGB rig is TEC cooled. I used thermal paste in between the modwerx.com heatsinks and the 3/8" aluminum baseplate for my red and blue diodes. The baseplate is one gigantic heatsink, very cool to the touch even after running for over an hour!
 
Such a baseplate surely has lots of thermal mass, and if its large enough quite some dissipating ability as well. Its cool if it works with natural convection, but realistically you would probably have to add a fan if you want to run it in a sealed enclosure.

I am in the process of building my first Sound Card DAC / multi-color RRGB laser scanner. I have a +200mw green TTL/analog, 1W 445nm blue and two LOC-815 red diodes. I also purchased a set of SpaceLas PT-20K galvos, C-Media external sound card and a "LaserBoy" correction amp.

The only problem is that Dr. Lava no longer has the complete correction amp kits, just the bare PC boards! After quite a bit of research, and a couple of emails between myself and the doctor, I was able to order all the components online for the bare PC board. In the interest of helping others out, I have compiled a list of everything you will need (plus links) to complete the correction amp...

in the list there are 12 50K potentiometers but in the pic there are 6 10K (offset) and 6 50K (gain), what i have to use?

can i use also 81-PV36W503C01B00 from mouser? (cheaper than yours)
 
You can use all 50k pots.. it won't matter except that the pots will be a touch more sensitive. You can use that part number with no problem.

Also if you need hookup wire I recommend getting the 22AWG solid 100ft from Jameco with your order [Part# Black: 36792, Red: 36856, Yellow: 36920, Blue: 36768, Green: 36822, White: 36881]. For building you will need wire stripers, solder, and a soldering iron. You may also need to purchase four standoffs.

Happy to be of service! I am glad you made use of my list. My projector project turned out AWESOME!
 
I purchased an alternative USB soundcard, the "Best Connectivity SD-AUD20040" from Amazon.com because I didn't want to wait a month for DX to ship their card. The SD-AUD20040 sound card uses the same Cmedia CM6206 chip as the DX card, but has a complete set of 7.1 surround sound ports compared to the DX card. Whether this is worth the $5 premium (+ shipping if you don't have prime) is up to you.

The case is locked up very tight. You need to push down at the seam between the plastic side-panels depicted here to unlock the case. I ended up snapping one of the plastic grasps on the panel.

Here is the pin-out and how you would solder the connections like Electrofreak has shown on the DX card. There are also two more channels (7 and 8) in case you need to connect something else up too. I believe these are correct after consulting references on the TRS connector and surround sound channels.

The power and ground pins are not as easily accessed as on the DX card. You'll need to connect it to the two solder points I've highlighted in the photo.
