It would be VERY unsafe and unreliable but you can always hook up a big resistor to 220v and wrap a piece of metal around it and use it as a tip.
Tell your dad you're gonna wrap a piece of metal around something that's going to go to 220v and he'll spend the 8 bucks his son needs to learn a new ability.
well, he is in homebuilding so he has seen injuries( well maybe not from soldering guns)
well, i want to make lasers from diodes in dvd burners but i need a soldering gun.
i would say its safe enough. worst case is that you will get a minor burn if anything actually does happen. i have let my 8 yr old son do some soldering with me. one day i even let him weld.. well sorta, he pulled the trigger. i have some awesome pix of him in my leathers that are like 5times too big for him lol. we made a ammo box for his army men it was awesome. but i would say it would be way safer to just buy one than to even attempt at making one. tell him it would be a good father/son thing. as long as you keep safety in mind it will be ok. i also think soldering is a good skill to have. i used to suck when i first started but now im pretty good at it, i even managed to fix a few things around the house. it might even come in handy for you.
good luck
