It would be VERY unsafe and unreliable but you can always hook up a big resistor to 220v and wrap a piece of metal around it and use it as a tip.

Tell your dad you're gonna wrap a piece of metal around something that's going to go to 220v and he'll spend the 8 bucks his son needs to learn a new ability.

well, he is in homebuilding so he has seen injuries( well maybe not from soldering guns)
well, i want to make lasers from diodes in dvd burners but i need a soldering gun.

Ask him politely, let him know what you want to do. Also add that if he wants to supervise you it's ok.

You're 16 years old, c'mon. Is he gonna ban soldering irons for you until you're 21?

Ask him to teach you if all else fails.

Show your dad a ad for one of those cold solder guns and freak him out.

a cold solder gun or tool uses a small arc to melt the solder , would that be safe to use on a diode?

Show your dad a ad for one of those cold solder guns and freak him out. Or actually don't do your resistor trick it wouldn't be smart . If you were to get a 1/4 inch piece of solid copper rod about 4 inches long and set it into a wooden handle grind the end to a nice point and get yourself a good micro torch type cigarette lighter you would have a pretty darn good soldering iron. Just drive enough heat into the copper and it would solder for a short time well, just a pain in the butt heating it up repeatedly.

i would say its safe enough. worst case is that you will get a minor burn if anything actually does happen. i have let my 8 yr old son do some soldering with me. one day i even let him weld.. well sorta, he pulled the trigger. i have some awesome pix of him in my leathers that are like 5times too big for him lol. we made a ammo box for his army men :) it was awesome. but i would say it would be way safer to just buy one than to even attempt at making one. tell him it would be a good father/son thing. as long as you keep safety in mind it will be ok. i also think soldering is a good skill to have. i used to suck when i first started but now im pretty good at it, i even managed to fix a few things around the house. it might even come in handy for you.

You are 16, I would guess you have a week end job, so you can buy it yourself.

I am not suggesting doing it behind your dads back, show him that you want it enough to pay for it yourself.

What is the danger of a soldering iron? You can burn yourself badly! BUT you will only do it once:).
Is it really the soldering iron or what you will be doing with it that is the problem?

Besides, he can't stop you from injuring yourself just by keeping you away from all the potential hazards. You have to learn how to deal with them yourself unless he wants to keep you in a bubble and take care of you your whole life. And 16 sounds like a good age to start learning how to solder. You have enough coordonation not to burn yourself.

Hehe, my dad let me solder when I was around 7-9 and he let me use a blow torch around then too :D but that's because he was always doing that stuff and I was curious to see how it was done etc.

just let your dad know that you'll be safe with it and try not to accidentally burn anything. As a few people have said, you might get a serious burn, but you'll only do it once. If you get good at soldering you might even be able to help him out with fixing stuff up! :D

hmm....does he still refuse to let you drive?
are you still confined to the transportation of a bicycle? does it still have training wheels?

parents guard and protect their kids too much these days.....thats why they have the mind frame of a child by the time they are an adult and then they get thrown out into the world to lvie on their own, can't handle it an slit their wrists

hehehe....

just go buy one....it's like 7.99 at radio shack......who cares what your father says, he is being unreasonable.

If you want to do some heavy duty soldering... then a Soldering Gun will do..

but if you want to do some Electronic component soldering I would suggest
you get a Soldering Iron instead.:yh:

I can't see why you can not purchase a tool do do some low temperature soldering...
It's not like you were wanting a high temperature acetylene torch...

So true. My parents kinda freak when i play like, lets say gta san andreas , killing people randomly, then like i would go to school and do the same. They are against all even a bit violence games.

Also if i come home with something they havent seen before, if i dont tell where did it come from, they assume i stole it.(like lending a ps3 game from a friend) I have never stolen anything.

Also, my parents gonna divorce (i know its usual nothing bad) and they always go to argue some place i aint. if i go where they talkin' they dont want me to hear those things. Like omg isnt the world always perfect and good. Exactly, they want to raise me in a bubble world where nothing is bad etc..

[/end of whining]
