Smoke off diode?

Recently I was cleaning my 1.2W 445 diode window with a lenspen and I accidentally bumped the button while doing so. The lenspen fried a little bit, but it's fine. The glass window however, is not. The smoke from the burning left a line of residue on the diode window. The lenspen won't take it off and I don't know what else to do. Does anyone know how to possibly clean it off?
 





People have had limited success cleaning these windows; I know someone's done it, but I forget who it was. Hopefully they see this thread. :yabbem:

You could decan it, but because this is an InGaN diode it will degrade and die in a few months.

Use acetone and a q-tip. Wet the q-tip and gently lay it on the diode window. Then spin and pull up at the same time. Do the same with the dry end of the q-tip. Repeat till its clean.

A gun should not be loaded when cleaning and why would you have the battery in the laser while you clean it?

What causes the degradation?

If its as simple as corrosion of the window then surely backfilling the module with inert dry argon gas from a welding cylinder would work?

Making the module airtight might be a bit of a pain though, my thought was to UV glue a window in place halfway down the aixiz then press fit the decanned diode, solder on wires and backfill with argon.
Then UV glue the back of the can to ensure no air can leak in.

As the construction of this is remarkably similar to a Geiger tube an end window can be substituted for the glass to make a $1 replacement for a $100 tube which fits into any old surplus case.
Replace the diode with a thin metal tube i.e. from a printer ink refill kit, fill up gap with non conducting UV glue and vacuum it down then backfill with the required mixture of halogen and argon.

Gosh this seems like a lot of work just to save a $30 diode... ?
 
Given that nail polish remover is liike %98 acetone, it should be fine right?
 
Nail polish remover has other chemicals and sometimes dyes and perfumes. Use real aceton.
 
^^^ Agreed ... only use 100% acetone, its available at wally world in the same section as mail polish remover.
 
You can also buy it in some drug stores. As said nail polish remover has other crap in there that could make the problem worst. Acetone is cheap, and is always good to have on hand. Clean your lens the same way.

Do not press hard on the window. If you dislodge the window, you'll have to de-can it.
 
I buy acetone over here from a fishing supplier, due to envirowhiners and nutjobs its about the only place left :-(

Interestingly you can get MEK, aka curing compound, epoxy and other goodies wholesale, a lot cheaper if you buy the boating stuff and not the model making stuff.
Its virtually identical and easy to mix with "Heat it Up" powder to make coloured glue.
I repaired a car lamp with red pen ink and epoxy, 2 years later and no leaks :-)

Interesting. I've owned a few boats and found anything associated with boating costs ~30% more than comparable store bought items.

Got any links? I'm sure it would help a lot of people out.
