You outta just use a fully adjustable RKCSTR Driver, or an LM-317 set-up with a "POT" on it

Good thing I didn't have the cash and therefore couldn't check my order out, then, isn't it? :D Is this a good price?

No cash lost on the Joule Thief, it was going to be made of scavenged parts anyway. I may use it for the LCD projector I've been threatening to make since March, though. Voltage adjustment for the light on that was being a pain.

LM-317 driver, PHR-803t and the protection googles i posted will be the cheapest, yet sufficient way. 25$ for these, which is all you need for the laser-part of that project. red wont be more effective, but more expensive (because of the googles). IR will be way more effective, which you dont need, but a lot more expensive for the laser and googles, again.

So you say the most cost-effective solution will probably be just to use the 100mW Blu-Ray diode? If so, I think I'll just go with that.

so other than the diode... I'll probably need a housing, yes? Are the housing and lens on this page a good choice, or do you have better recommendations?

Sorry to say this, but this reduce your available power, and burnin capacity too.

Sleds are not built for power, they're built for precision and focusing spot diameter ..... this means that all the elements inside contribute to this, but also take away lot of power ..... just as example, the diaphragm alone (the little plate wit the hole in front of the diode) take away half of the light, in the purpose to obtain a round beam shape ..... the cube, lenses and so on, made another good part ..... if you use the sled as is, you're probably lucky if you get 1/3 of the total power produced from the diode ..... and this being optimists :)

Er, I was probably not clear by what I meant by this. The sled carriage is just for the stable linear motion, not for actually doing the burning. You'd just gut the carriage and mount the laser and heatsinks to it with glue or something.
 
Oh, understood ..... anyway, this give you a very short field of operation, the maximum travel lenght of the carriage i mean.

That host have lenses for red, you're planning to use a blu-ray (405nm, violet), and those lenses are not the better choice.

You can find aixiz modules and 405nm glass lenses for them easily, from some users here, or also on ebay, directly on aixiz e-shop , for better results ..... and if you plan to use the assembly for a long time, probably you need also a heatsink for the aixiz module (but this is easily made with a block of aluminium :))
 
i agree, a phr diode in an aixiz housing is enough. even the stock acrylic lens will be fine. it "costs" up to a third of the power, but you can still get 100mW out the front. the dot will be quite good too (maybe better than with the more expensive lenses). heat will be fine too. and the aixiz module would be light enough to be moved quick enough (for the laserpower at least).

Ordered a driver last night. Payment hasn't cleared yet, so probably won't arrive just yet.

A puzzle: A week and a half ago, I ordered the diodes. They arrived a week ago.(yay!)

They also arrived just today? Sent E-mail to HighTechDealz.
