Yes, Rich is still making and selling hosts. He also has some 501B hosts that are great for powers up to 1.5 watts. Check out the photos in his signature.
 
Hi LPF,
Here is a nice small host with a CU sink and a Brass focus adapter prewired for 1X18650 battery. This will fit a full 12mm module with the AL back half.

here is a heat sink with fan that runs off 2 X 9V batteries , works great for testing diodes to LPM keeping them cool.

back in February i bought this 900w 635nm laser in a red 501b host from Rich. well its been a while since iv used it and i somehow forgot if its a single 18650 or 2 18350s ? my memory sucks. I am actually looking to sell a few of my lasers because im trying to save for the new Nikon P1000 camera. IMG_20181025_222659 by Alex Littig, on Flickr
 
You can always try an 18650 first to see if it doesn't need 8 volts to run. Mine uses a buck driver that would take either battery options. The Vf of these diodes is very low, so it isn't using a boost driver.

I tried an 18650 and it turns on but it's only like 40 mw
 
Are you sure the battery is still good and fully charged? If it uses a buck driver that should be enough voltage to run it if the battery is good and fully charged.
 
Hi Alex,
Ok take out the lens and see if it has a can . If it does its a Oclaro 700 and if it doesn't and its a open can its a Mitsubishi 500
Those are the only two 638's I use.
