I warned you about the way you are handling this GB. If someone gets hurt you could be held liable. Now I am telling you, for your own good...DO NOT commit to selling any of these goggles until you have them tested. I would also like to know who will be testing them. You are playing with peoples vision...do the right thing!

I have some WL 650nm OD 2 glassses which I am thinking of returning for these but these have to be an OD of 3 otherwise its not worth it...

any thoughts?

OD 2 is good enough for up to 500mW of 650nm. You will be able to see the dot better. You don't really need OD3 unless you want more protection. Though it is good to have. Stay with your WL. These goggles here are still a big unknown and not much cheaper.

Cheers, I need to know will the WL protect me from direct exposure? even from a 200mW (which I am going to get...) an OD of 2 means that it will be like looking into a 2mW laser... am I right?

Well. the blink reflex is sufficient to protect your eyes up to 5mW according to laser safety standards. The damage occurs when you stare into a beam. even prolonged exposure to <1mW can be extremely damaging. Depending on your application I don't see how one can be staring into a laser. If you want to be able to see the dot relatively well far off then OD2 is good enough. If you are worried that you may accidentally be directly exposed to the laser for a long enough period when you are working with it close range, the od3 or higher is good. I use OD5+ with 100mW+ greens and are perfectly fine with them since I don't feel compelled to see the dot from afar and would rather have more protection during close range burning where there are high chances of stray direct reflection.

Technically the OD2 should be sufficient for you to shine the laser at your eyes and give your reflexes sufficient time to move away and avoid permanent damage. Not so with OD1 though as flash blindness might occur easily.

Vlt is quite important to consider as well as others have mentioned. For me I find 25% to be the minimum as it can already be quite dark through that. 40% is excellent and about as good as it gets.

For green goggles, it might be worthwhile to consider those that also block IR as well. Stray Ir can be strenuous for the eyes even if not well collimated. Especially for those with DX lasers without ir filters. but if your laser is well filtered I find it is possible to survive with lower quality red tinted goggles with poorer vlt. But after using those with orange lenses made by Noir, I find the protection and vlt to be vastly superior. Comes at a cost though so it is really up to you.

Actually it's about the same cost as this GB really. If you look hard enough you can find some better deals either here or elsewhere. Not zonestealth or expensive ebayish scam goggles though. DDL himself got a really good Uvex pair from me sometime back for real cheap. Probably one of the best I have seen so far. Haven't really heard of any good source of goggles for red lasers besides WL though.

The WL goggles should be enough to protect you, plus I've read several times that they're actually OD3. Many senior members use them and recommend using them. Just don't try to look directly into the beam.
These are the OD transmittance percentages:

OD1 transmits 10%
OD2 transmits   1%
OD3 transmits   0.1%
OD4 transmits   0.01%
OD5 transmits   0.001%
OD6 transmits   0.0001%

So, if the WL shades are OD3, the dot of a 100mW would look like the dot of a .1mW laser. To be able to see a 1mW dot you'd need to have a 1000mw (1 watt) laser.

5 seconds direct exposure is too long!! you should be able to get the hell out of the way in under 1 second. OD2 will not protect your eyes for 5seconds. even for OD3 @200mW still gives you 0.2mW for a good 5 seconds focussed into a pinpoint on your retina. Might be good enough but really i cannot envision someone looking for the big red light bulb for over 5 seconds.

The first line of protection is to handle the laser with care and respect. The goggles are there to make sure 1) in case you accidentally flash yourself either directly or through specular reflection 2)to cut down diffuse reflections off surfaces so you can see what you are doing with your dot.

Don't worry man you'll be fine, just close your eyes or turn away if the laser hits you directly, but as long as your wearing the goggles you'll be ok.
