Rural areas compared to city dwellers with lasers

I'm in the city, so during the summer I usually pop outside to my backyard at around 3am, just like Red and Pete, with the exception of that's actually just how late I'll stay up :shhh:
Winter is awesome though, cause at its earliest the sky gets midnight dark around 4:15ish, so there's plenty of dark time. Plus at 30 below there's not a whole lotta foot traffic, and with all the white stuff there's rarely cars going by. Winter air is pretty crisp, so a cloudless night is a relatively great one for stargazing.

Hi Gabe,
Nice your able to put out beams at least city beams are really cool but more attention is drawn towards you. But in the wee hours of the morning is perfect, no one around but us folks LOL!! Hey and at 30degrees cooling isn't an issue . longer duty times you can't beat that buddy. You know from what i'm getting back in responses we need dis stuff. WL'S rule pal..

Rich:)

Hi Alex your Islander now?? Don'T mess me up sorry if i missed a name change

Rich:)

I'm on a beautiful 15 acre property outside Sydney.
Nice semi dark skies, great for astro photography and very nice to use lasers on, with caution of course !

Still within reach of civilisation but secluded enough to still have lots of privacy.

So we're happy !

Hi,
Wow Bangor it's sweet out west from here there you have the advantage to get great shots and show them around.Hey 800 ft per sec. is great if you want to hunt small game. add a red dot sight it in there fun . i have a few high power .177/.20,..22 cal pistons , they are powerful i like shooting them.
Your beam back stop is great it's perfect at where your at.

Rich:)

It's fun testing my beam expander from a casgrain telescope and seeing how big the laser dot gets by looking from my 20x80 binoculars when it hits junk like the washing machine up there. Hell I even made a getto laser using the 20x80 and a bright led. Also I have various pellets including these plastic tipped ones that went through 3 inches of ice.
one time we needed WD-40 for my bike but the can was missing propellant( it was old and rusted.) so I did 5 pumps and got it right above the WD-40 made 2 holes and we where able to dump it out in a bottle. It's fun being able to shoot a soda can at 80-100 feet)

I live in the "city". But it's barely a city. More of a town. I live in northern AZ. at about 7000 ft. I can drive for 10 mins. and be in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes the clouds move through here so low, it looks as if you can reach out and touch them. Can't wait to get some low hanging snow clouds to see how well I can light 'em up. Also cloudless nights during a new moon are awesome for stargazing, and night photography! :yh:

Hi astro,
wow down under it's an awesome place that you live. The sky at night must be full of stars and do you see many meteor showers.\? Hey take some night shots it's a beautifull country over there. Thank you mate that's great to hear from you

Rich:)

Hi Joey,

I enjoy the air rifles very much they keep my aiming in sync. Well thats when i'm not using a metallic round. believe me these pellet guns now a day are pure power. And all kinds of different pellets to choose from, for different purposes.

Rich:)

Hi Chris,
Try to bounce the beams at the clouds for some really neat shot at night. You live in a great place for this kind of photographs even some canyon and mountain shot with abeam. Night time out west epic my man..

You bet, -30°C and sometimes even -40° natural cooling is great.... Until you get a DPSS laser that likes it warm!! You gotta swaddle the laser under your coat, around the armpit cause that's where it's warmest
There's a joke that goes around here during the winter times.., it's of a foreigner (sometimes an American) coming to Canada to stay, on his first week he goes to a house party to meet some people. He brings a case of beer for everyone, and once he's inside he goes to put the beer in the fridge... The party quiets down as everyone starts staring at him, he's confused until finally someone speaks up and says "what are you doin, you're wasting pizza space! The whole fucking countrys an icebox!"
'Course, any beer outside would freeze pretty quickly in even the warmest of subzero nights, what with how watered down all the beer is...

Mine came with a 5x scope but I use the iron sights with no scope on it.
I shot 2 soda cans down at once with one BB

Indeed! It was mentioned, but cold nights usually produce some of the clearest skies. Last winter I was trying to do some night sky photography when it was low 20's out. The cold made my tripod mount brittle, and it ended up cracking when I was repositioning the camera. :yabbmad:
You can get some awesome shots on those cool clear nights, but it can be a bit tedious as you wait for those long exposures. I think this winter I'll find a cheap pair of gloves and cut a couple of the fingers off, so my hands don't feel like they're gunna fall off. lol

Gabe ive had friends who had visited Canada an have brought back some of that beer and after drinking 5 an wondering why im almost on the floor then they tell me they forgot to say Canadian beer is twice the alcohol (nice) In all seriousness after reading gozarts thread and him having to sell his lasers or risk jail time I really got depressed as I found this hobby almost by accident and like alot of members it helps with my depression. Ive seem to come a about a year to late to really have had some fun. My living situation is that I live most of the time in 14 story complex which is in the highest part of the city but that is negated by nosey tenants who hang around outside an have nothing to do but watch the news and would think of nothing but to call the authoritys just to be heard regardless on how safe im lasing, then when I stay at my home near Boston I get the snobby neighbors who see the same news but would call for different reasons. My best time lol is also at 3:00 AM when I have to get up go to the bathroom (Im 53). So now im basicly stuck to playing with them inside and im running out of things to try. Popping ballons, lighting matches, cutting tape and burning Cd cases can only go so far, yes I have my toy laser gun props that I play with and made a big round cardboard tube to help see the beam but members please give me some advice to what else I can do im starting to lose a tiny bit of interest:undecided:.....Alex I welcome you as Islander

Hi,
@joey,
Hey i would use that 5x scope they are great one you sight it in you will be able to shoot and hit targets further away. I have those 3x7 weaver scopes on some of mine and i love them.
Rich:)

@ Chris,
Yes those cold nights do have to clear skies and temps very low. Get those gloves because the lasers will perform a lot better at those temp. To cut the time down a bit make sure you have all your stuff ready and set up. take some shots go get warmed up come back and take some more. Take you time and just think of all the coo pics you can have when your done freezing..
Rich:)

@GSS,
Hey have you ever thought about taking shots indoors and making a small photo album? Get some small prism's and mirrors set them up to direct the beam to move at different angles.
You can get some awesome shots to share here at LPF. Hey it will keep you busy just by adjusting the the mirrors at other angles. Or how about trying the draw pics of host designs that would be cool. Keep building don't loose interest you your self say's you like the hobby . Despite of were we live we have to modify and adapt to our surroundings. Hang in there buddy better days are coming ,so don't miss out. Hey you have us here at LPF to hang out with..
Rich:)
