What is so special about this, apart from it's portable form factor?

Combining 2 or 3 wavelengths to create a beam that looks white is nothing new, most show equipment can do that.

Sad when we lose 'assets' when its beyond all control (died- ill- etc)
..BUT really sad when its due to circumstances that were NOT. PLUS no way to know about new members driven off shortly after joining due to unfriendly treatment. a lot more, I bet, than most here know about. Example is far too many neg reps handed out when it was not justified.

I have seen all of 1 and it is what I consider Expensive and (while it is good) I consider it a hack job. That is not a negative statement in any way at all. It takes and modifies a sled. I would have no issues with that really, but it isn't ideal and for 135.00 I would like to have a fully machined host. If anyone knows of any hosts or has examples please share them. I have searched and found wanting.

CLEARLY you missed my point. Not that someone has not created this or done this. No one is currently offering a host for sale (save one). The only RBG host I have seen advertised for sale uses a kit with a sled and custom module mounts. This must be housed in a square box. Handheld yes... but not what I am looking for exactly.

I'm with you Trendkilla, that would so awesome if someone was regularly building and selling these hosts! Someone could make a lot of money if they sold them completed too. These little rich kids would kill to be the first one they know to have one of these. I'd love to have one too! My skills are not quite up to spec to be building one though. :/ But, I'm learning more and more everyday!

I wasn't trying to address that, I just wanted to point out that there have been some very nice builds that are not "hack jobs". If you really want one that bad you could get a machinist to make one, although I doubt it'd be cheap. Unfortunately for us, cheap and high quality aren't easy to find together.

And another question to ask is, how much $$$ are you willing to pay to have a RGB laser?

I remember back in the day either the builder or the owner posted that it costed thousands of dollars. Still the best build I've ever seen.

he made one with analog modulation that HAS to be an EPIC build that cost thousands of $$$ and a LOT of time spent.

Speaking of valuable MIA members Rog88 had IIRC at least some RG=Y (I think that is what the OP meant) which are easy & so are RB=magenta and GB=Teal or Aqua. Lots of those have been made & IRC a few yeas back a maker offered to make some 2 color kits-


The 350mW white AixiZ modules are back in stock- price went up to $145usd.
IMHO I would much prefer using the AixiZ in a small box- w/ the ttl you get 7 'colors' and even w/o adding a fan a fairly long run time & w/ fan no rest cycle would be needed in most cases.

15mm round dichro holders for (crudeish) beam combining--very cheap. AixiZ does have the dichros but this is one item that may be gotten from Techhood et al as AxiZ 'may' haave 'better' ones IDK but for sure they have morespendy ones..For most uses on laser projects the quality of the dichro mirrors is not all that important.
ONE caution- these 'sleds' are open when you get them- thus hard to keep away from dust BUT more importantly the dirchros ( not round) are very easy to bump and break- I mke a semi-ridgid 'covering' in place unless I need it to run. Thin coated glass should just never be exposed to dust etc- as cleaning is risky-
same for FS mirrors. Paper towels and your breath are NOT a good idea. $$ FirstContact is worth the expense for cleaning these- "paint'' it on- wait- peel it off --

...and while its true that some items at least appear to be the same as cheaper ones offered FROM CHINA- It does not take a genius to understand WHY and also why paying a little more comes with improved customer service and WAY quicker shipping from Houston.

-- Not sure all the extra cost and work makes the AixiZ 350 mW white a poor choice even for a portable.. It likes 350-400 mW @ 12vdc
and small AND has TTL thus it would be a true seven color HHeld but not like a 'traditional' pointer.

people wearing 'lasershow' glasses dont get to see the white(or Yelloow- magenta or aqua) ... thus 'undoing' all the hard work put into a good -looking White laser.
BTW 'passive' cooling would not be good for a RGB 'pointer' and that adds way more work & $$ TEC fan hestsinkage'

can sb tell me, why the output beam especially the red/blue looks so smooth and thin. is this due to the use of highend diodes or optics?

I'm fine with having a host machined. I will likely do just that. Ehgemus sells a block for I think 55.00 for RBG. I could modify that I suppose, but again that would be what I consider a "hack job". I want it as close to drop in ready. Not required, but would be a plus. I am not looking for the highest of quality control. I plan to use this at work for a pointer. (I will work out the 5mw logistics) I have all the modules other than that 638nm red that I want to use. I would think that Ehgemus could machine something similar to what you posted in the links (which I have seen prior). He was very well priced on my prior Lightsaber custom host. He is also very easy to work with and very nice. I don't wish to post any prices untill after he responds. BUT if I were to combine the price I paid for my custom lightsaber with the RBG block he has for 55.00, I would say it might be able to be done fairly reasonably.

As long as I can get the beams to stay combined for roughly 50 feet I'll be happy. I plan to use this indoors mostly. 1-5mw each color. My top end plan (which is likely to not happen but what I would like) would be to have a small laptop track pad and an arduino to control the color. I will likely use 3 sliders though. It just depends on the shape of the host and of course cost.

How I would do this is a 3 position switch, 1st position would be off, second would take the ground to a set of drivers that would be set for 1-5mw variable, the third position would swap the ground to a 2nd set of drivers that would be for a "higher" power setting. I may not even need 2 "sets" of drivers. I may be able to take leads off the drivers resistor spot and wire appropriately.
I will be going with a 515nm a 638nm and most likely 450nm (this is still the part that I'm unsure of as the brightness is lacking in 450nm, I need to send my 450nm module off to Pman to have him LPM it. I think I might be driving it too low, I have seen other pictures of 5mw of 450nm and mine is very very very dim in comparison. It could very well just be that way though.)

I'm sorry to derail this thread from just making a simple statement that I wanted a purchase ready RGB host that is mass produced.
