What should be done with the reputation system?

This rep system is very interesting, we are but the mice in the maze.

My count is 217 ish and when I rep a new member his count will no not go up even 1 rep , NOW there is a points count.

I thought maybe I give 217 points and 1000 points equals 1 rep point...or so I thought.

I repped Cypragon yesterday and his count jumped up 3 rep from 800 whatever to 800 and whatever plus 3.

HOW???

Also during his and VisibleGreens war his count went from 600 ish to 800ish.

Like he said.

Rep means nothing.

You have to listen to every word someone says, there are clues.

We are all being played with like mice in a maze.

Screw rep, I want to build lasers.

Some google-fu revealed the following;

The Dark Green and Light Green Bars that show on the right side of a member’s
post represent ranges of Rep Points received.

For each 100 reputation points you get an extra Rep Bar until you are at 500 then
it takes 200 point to get the next Rep Bar and so on.

Rep Points -- Dark Green Rep Power Bars -- Light Green Rep Power Bars

1-99 --------- 1 --------------------------- 0
100-199 ------ 2 --------------------------- 0
200-299 ------ 3 --------------------------- 0
300-399 ------ 4 --------------------------- 0
400-499 ------ 5 --------------------------- 0
500-699 ------ 5 --------------------------- 1
700-899 ------ 5 --------------------------- 2
900-1099 ----- 5 --------------------------- 3
1100-1299 ---- 5 --------------------------- 4
1300-1499 ---- 5 --------------------------- 5

A Dark (Non-Green) Bar means you have no Rep points.

A Red Bar means you have Negative Rep points.

If you have Zero or Negative Reps you can only give Neutral Reps (Non-Green)...

Only if you have a Positive Pep count can you give or take Positive Reps.

IIRC a point is also added at 100 posts, 250 posts, 500, 1000, and every 500 posts after that.

Not sure on the finer points of the system since it can be setup in many different ways. Personally I find it interesting to look at the number of clicks involved as well...

You can go to Community -> Members List and from there sort by reputation.

Unfortunately that only shows you the order, it doesn't show the "Clicks, Rep Level, Power". You can go to individual profiles and Reputation Tab for the rep level, but that's about it.

I jest. That's just a rounding error I'd assume. For example 850.4 is rounded down to 850. 850.4 + 2.2 = 852.6, which is rounded up to 853.

Ok but when I rep a new member his points go up but not his count, does the value of a rep given change based on the current rep of the receiver?

That is my rep backed by 217 is worth X

Will X cause a larger rep count increase when given to a member with 800 rep than when given to a member with 8 rep?

No it won't.

Just did some testing with accounts that haven't been active in a while, and it looks like 100 points = 1 rep power.

The only issue is we see the rep power rounded to the nearest 100.

So if you rep someone with 500 points, 5 rep they will only show +2 to rep power, and end up with 7.

If you rep someone with say 534 points, also 5 rep, they will show +3 to rep power.

So again it seems the system is subtly geared to make it easier to gain rep vs losing it.

I just did a test, look at what my rep did, it gave some points on the path to a single rep.

From 103 to 321 but no where near a rep count increase.

How did my rep the other day boost a high count member 3 complete rep?

I am good with math, but some multiplication variable is missing here.

Simple, rep power is just not shown at all until a member has at least 50 posts.

Also not shown if it's negative, since it's effectively zero.

You did add two squares though :beer:

Edit:

Me currently "64444 point(s) total"

In order to bump me to 708 rep power, all it would take is just 6 points. 106 for 709, 206 for 710, and so on.

I just want to build lasers, I can't buy a 6 pack with rep points so I don't care about it.

What I do care about is teaching new people safety rather than chasing them away, and our ability as a group to get deals on custom made optics that we are going to need.

It's my humble opinion that we should focus on things we can enjoy related to our hobby.

BTW I love the new SXD without that flimsy pot, big improvement I think.

Funny.... I think I'm going to take a break from LPF for awhile, if I can, I'm so addicted to the forum I check in several times a day, but it has become obvious to me VG is creating a dozen member names using a proxy to hide his IP and even though I had a long talk with him the other day, and don't dislike him personally, I don't like this behavior and being played with. Catch you all later after this all settles down, but it might be weeks to months, maybe never until he stops, I imagine.
