I have been working my a$$ off and saving up for the new 12x. I should be able to afford one now !!!!

Anyone got a 12x working yet ???

Also, I should probably let someone experienced build it for me. Also, I wouldn't mind if that person did testing on the diode (so long as it doesn't die !!!!)

Anyone ?? Igor? Dave?

It seems like we don't really know what these are capable of and I am really interested. That's why id like to be one of the first to help in the testing of these.

Also, which model should I purchase ?? It seems as if pioneer/plextor are the only ones releasing them at the moment correct ? If so I'd be leaning toward pioneer.

Please keep an eye out for these and post asap when one is released somewhere.

As for how much I can spend, probably just the price of the 12x drive and then some (for driver/host)

haha, omg u posted this 1 hour ago!!! Can't believe I missed it.

EDIT: Oh snap, its a 8x inside!!!???

Please, God, Let it be a real 12x diode inside!!

After reading Dave's thread, I'm beginning to doubt that this is a new diode. The most non-destructive way to do this would be to compare the power efficiency curves for a bunch of 8x's and 12x's.

Dave, do you have a full 8x drive lying around? I'm interested in seeing the differences in all of the components of the two drives. If it's really a vibration damping issue, you should be able to see some modified mechanisms on the drive.

So what kind of write speeds do you all think could be achieved if they combined the vibration dampening technology with a real 12X diode?

Well... the increase in vibration damping gave us an increase factor of 1.5. Assuming a 12X diode is half again as powerful and thus can write half again as fast - I'd say we can use the 1.5 factor again since the vibration damping effect would be compounded with a faster diode.

My money is on 18X based on my assumptions.

I don't have a full anything drive sitting around. I may have an 8X later next week. I think someone is having one drop shipped to me for repair work. Somebody else will have to buy a 12X

I don't know much about the subject, and don't really care all that much (Violet Lasers aren't really of much interest to me)...
But ever since the first 12X Blu-ray thread my gut has been telling me that it is the same diode as the 8X.
My reasoning is this:
1. A multi-layer disc does not need any more power than 500mW max for quick burning. Any more power than that and you'll slice up the disc. Especially with BR.
2. The amount of electrical power running through the diode while lasing at >400mW will likely produce more heat than a tiny sled heat-sink can dissipate effectively.
3. I have never seen any single mode laser diode in excess of 500mW (IR included) in a 5.6mm package type.

I'd hate to be a party pooper, but I never expected much from the beginning.
But you can disregard this... I haven't done any research or experimenting with violet diodes.

you *have* to be wrong! :-P
lets see..

1. A multi-layer disc does not need any more power than 500mW max for quick burning. Any more power than that and you'll slice up the disc. Especially with BR.
why 500mW? sure, its meant to burn and destroy! meant to destroy the pigment between the layers. the faster the rotationspeed, the shorter the time to burn the mark. so if anything, the distance between CW and pulsed could go up, as the pulsing will be shorter and shorter..
the previous (CD, DVD) limitations were because of spindle rotation speed. even with 1w singlemode diodes, dvds couldnt burn (much) faster than now. i didnt look what the rotational limit for BR is, i should! ..and optical drives are the only (large) taker of sinhlemode diodes altogether. no big use to develop higher-power red diodes..

2. The amount of electrical power running through the diode while lasing at >400mW will likely produce more heat than a tiny sled heat-sink can dissipate effectively.
..then they will enlarge heatsinking, until its too havy. or will build more heat-resistant diodes. or, finally, use a tiny fan to cool the heatsink. that fan doesnt even need to be on the moving part. there were drives with fans before..

3. I have never seen any single mode laser diode in excess of 500mW (IR included) in a 5.6mm package type.
look above at 1). no need for higher power single-mode yet. in fact, besides optical drives, i can only think of labs and holography, for using singlemode-diodes at all. oh, and lasers for (communication-) fibers too, in IR.

so by disproving you, i effectively proved there will be multi-watt singlemode diodes in 5.6mm cans, as well as the 12x diode being almost "watt" too? :-)

(didnt disprove anything, we both just told possibilities and opinions!)

They already have 450mW violet diodes for drives. I have an 8X running at 512mW. Also the buzz from the industry is that they are anticipating a need for a 900mW laser in future applications.

Peace,

True, I believe it was Sony that stated that..

and who else would have? They invented the Blu Ray disc!

Need? WE need them to need that!

dave your 405 running at 500mw odd, are you doing life testing or just short testing?

Yes, but here it is customary to torture our diodes to oblivion.

This 512mW diode is surely driven beyond specifications. IIRC most others have not had such luck with the 8Xs (3-400mW is considered "safe" yes?).

I am not saying that future developments will not bring us stable >500mW CW single mode diodes...
Just that this 12X will not yield 1W.

We'll get there eventually...

I kept track of it up until 20 hours of burn time. Then I stopped keeping track and started just enjoying it. Be warned that most at 365mA are putting out less than 500mW. Mine appears to be pretty high efficiency. Also we have lost a couple at >350mA.

IgorT is waiting on the mail right now for a dozen 8X diodes to graph. I sent them on the 14th. After he does that, he is going to take the two lowest efficiency diodes and run them on his "cycler" to death. We will have a MUCH better idea of the long term survivability current then.

Peace,
dave
