Re: new Sharp 495nm diode(after testing it confirmed just 488nm)

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Can't wait to see what you come up with. I'll be here. :yh:

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

The spectrometer reading came back from CNI at 488.16nm. Quite impressive and disappointing at the same time.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Well, it was a long shot that it would actually turn out to be 495nm. Still, a 488nm is not bad at the price you paid. I will get a chance to spectro one of these myself, so we won't have to go with just your diode's reading. I think the one I have coming will get here in the next week or so. BTW, you can track all three of your packages as they left Seattle tonight.

I'm looking forward to see the results.
They told me the beam profile of this diode has an empty center which would render it useless for a build with a nice collimated beam. Not sure what to do with my diode at this point.

Also thanks for the update on the shipping, hope they will arrive safely.

I don't know what to say about that. Sounds like it has become defective or was already so, if what they are saying is true. I will have to see what the diode I have coming does.

Well, I packaged them well and wrapped them in bubble wrap inside a bubble wrap envelope. Unless they are stomped on or worse, they should arrive in excellent condition.

Although a bit OOT, strangely all my 405nm low power laser pen has this mode too (just like TEM01 in pic below),
The center is dimmer than the edge, but only on a slight level which could only be observed using goggles

IMO i suspected that it is not a defect, but rather a "feature"
But of course we need to see other diode first before coming to a conclusion :can:

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Very smart of techood, 2 flashlight type output diodes similar to the osram 488s. Let's name them sharp 495s and get something for them, fake spec sheet, You can always get your money back if there that bad though!

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

So the seller was selling 488 diodes labeled as 495? Can you file a chargeback with PP to get your money back? Still, you got a 488 diode so it must still be worth something. Sorry to hear that it wasn't what you were expecting :(

I'm not interested in getting my money back because I can easily get double what I paid for it.

How does it look when collimated ? I'm waiting for a picture from CNI to decide how bad it's.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

My 480 shows similar behavior if it isn't focused as tightly as humanly possible. Since the divergence is so low, I don't even notice it. I'll get a pic of it this weekend.

I might want to cancel the $900 488 I have ordered from existotem... hopefully they don't ship it until after I get this visually compared to my argon. I kind of hope this turns out to be as advertised, but things do not look good for that. Still happy to see it likely isn't a 480 or a 505.

Edit: '495' out for delivery today... so I will build it tomorrow. Fingers crossed on it being 495, but I wouldn't mind a 488 either.

There very quick to post, if you send them a message I garentee they have a tracking number for you and already posted.

What i see was when it's collimated and it's unnoticeable when viewing with naked eye,
only when using goggle, the center looks dimmer with circular shape than the edge.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Well I bought both the 495 and the 488 from them -- 495 was posted right away, but the 488 is taking quite a while. I'm just going to leave it alone for a bit, and then we'll see what happens tomorrow. I mean, I can probably re-sell the 488 if I leave it on ebay long enough, or if I built something with it maybe someone here would want it... but who knows. Time will tell. It might be taking longer because I asked them to bin me the lowest wavelength diode of the bunch.

But -- Ideally -- my diode will be 495nm and then I'll still have a desire to have the osram 488.

Edit: the 480 isn't quite as bad as that one sounds ^

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Yeah I chucked on a 3 element lens on my 473 tonight and the box die reflection is completely gone, looks just as good as a 405 divergence now, much nicer, but not all 3 element lenses or all G2 are alike so no guarantees.

Did it happen to be one for the red diodes? Maybe it's acting as a filter. An acrylic lens cuts it down but there is a loss in output so that's where I'm trying to associate the relation.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

The box forms from light reflecting back on to the die. Lenses with AR coating cut it back a lot, and lenses that sit further from the diode almost eliminate the box.
