Re: new Sharp 495nm diode(after testing it confirmed just 488nm)

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Did it happen to be one for the red diodes? Maybe it's acting as a filter. An acrylic lens cuts it down but there is a loss in output so that's where I'm trying to associate the relation.

It could very well be I could have mixed some up, I'll have a look when I get home it should have a blue tint if it's for red!

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

The box forms from light reflecting back on to the die. Lenses with AR coating cut it back a lot, and lenses that sit further from the diode almost eliminate the box.

Actually I tried a few lenses last night and a 2 element lens that nearly falls out when focused still showed a lot of splash, this lens is AR coated for 520 I believe, and another 3 element that stuck out of the module 3quarters had a terrible splash around the dot, witch is why I said no 2 are the same, I have many G2 and one works better on one diode and worse on another and visversa!

The acrilic lenses are no good on this diode either if u want to get rid of the die reflections!

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Although a bit OOT, strangely all my 405nm low power laser pen has this mode too (just like TEM01 in pic below),
The center is dimmer than the edge, but only on a slight level which could only be observed using goggles

IMO i suspected that it is not a defect, but rather a "feature"
But of course we need to see other diode first before coming to a conclusion :can:

These TEM01 and multi transverse modes only pertain to gas lasers like the He-Ne. Donut moding is not uncommon in these lasers, but never been actually seen in direct diode lasers. For this reason, I believe it is something entirely different. I have seen these modes myself in gas lasers and reported them here a long time ago. But, without having the diode here to examine, this is all just speculation.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Still don't know what to make of this, Dr.Laser. I know it is not donut moding, though. I hope all of these diodes don't turn out like this.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Tomorrow when I get mine built I'll see if I get the same effect. Hopefully CNI is just exaggerating...

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

:( guess no 495nm for a while. still $75 for a 488 isnt that bad at all

also iirc my 20mw violet has a sort of doughnut ring pattern described in that picture up there maybe i can get some pictures

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

So, did these diodes disappear completely from the market? I'm asking because I know some of you guys have good connections to Chinese suppliers.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

Every supplier I've managed to contact says they have never heard of these diodes before. Many suppliers also say the 505's and 480's shouldn't exist.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

What i see was when it's collimated and it's unnoticeable when viewing with naked eye,
only when using goggle, the center looks dimmer with circular shape than the edge.

does it look something like this?

this is my 20mw violet and it sounds like its doing something similar to what youve described

edit: 100th post!! yay!

That's some bad news. Hope someone manages to find more of them.

Re: new Sharp 495nm diode

I'm still semi-actively digging for more suppliers of the 480's and the 495's. Right now, the 480's are still available by lasertack by request... I just checked with them if they can get info about the 495's.

My first supplier for the 480's isn't responding to my emails.
