pressing TO-5 9mm diodes into hosts

Hi guys,

I'm having trouble locating and guides for pressing a 9mm diode into a TO-5 housing. Could anyone please suggest some tools, techniques? That would be much appreciated.

Back end of the aixiz module over the diode pins, put in a vice, center, tighten until diode is flush.

Will bend the back of the aixiz module inwards slightly, but easy & cheap way of doing it.
 
the "back end of the aixiz trick" is a lazy half-assed way to try and seat a diode that will only kinda' maybe seat it flush-ish.

If you are going to spend the $ on a nice 445 diode why not seat it correctly? It needs to be pushed all the way into the pocket for best thermal transfer.

I'm sure you have heard that saying " Use the right tool for the job. " FP is the originator of the right tool for this job.

$15 will seem cheap after you seat your diode crooked or shear off the pins.

The diode press makes it easy and is very much worth it. You can use other methods to seat the diode correctly but I have not seen one as safe as one of Jeff's diode presses.

On diodes like 445 diodes that produce tremendous amounts of heats it is very important to seat the diode all the way in the module so the top of the diodes base is in contact with the pocket for maximum surface area contact giving the best thermal transfer into the module.:beer:

I've never had an issue in the last 5 years I've been doing it, so I don't see how it's such a big issue.
Sure, buy something that'll do it better, but why buy a 2nd tool for the job when you have one that already works, even if it's not ideal?

Was just a suggestion in case this guy wanted to get the laser going now and not have to wait for postage.

Why buy copper modules? Why use silicone wire? Why buy a "G" lens? Why buy a premade surface mount component driver instead of building a cheap DIY lm317 driver? Why buy a machined heatsink instead of using stack of drilled out washers from the hardware store. Why buy quality batteries instead of Chinese " fire" brand rechargeables?

Do whatever you can afford and makes you happy. But why not spend a little bit more and do it right?
 
It's all personal preference, I've personally never bought a G lens, used silicone wire or a copper module, because I see them as unnecessary, as I do with a press tool. Your choice if you want to use it or not, like I said, just if this guy wanted to get up and running quick.

If you're pressing 5 modules a day, then sure, a tool is the way to go, but if he just wants to press 1 diode, it's an alternative.

I don't mind any tool but I'd like to know what can be used to press a TO-5 9mm diode in.
 
In earlier days I use bits to press. Look for a suitable bit and press it on the diode :)

does it matter how long the wires are between the Diode in Moduleand and the Driver & Pill Module ....im doing a build and have to solder the wires together.
