Power and Water, how often do you have an outage?

That wind storm was intense! I didn't loose power, but the top of a tree snapped off and dinged up my Jeep.

No outages in Anchorage, Alaska for years now.
At first I thought you were joking. Has Alaska figured out the best way to not lose power because its weather is so severe. Winters are very long and summers so short? I do like that show Alaskan State Troopers these men and women are the bravest of the brave by far.. Have you ever seen them being filmed:)

Our power outages are more likely from thunderstorm than much else. Hurricane Sandy was an exception, 2 days with no power. But the outages don't really bother me, I have a permanently installed natural gas generator. Thirty seconds after the power goes off, it starts and the lights come back on.

It was funny how many people go dumb when the power goes out. During Sandy, I had people tell me they didn't have hot water because they had no power. I told them their gas fired hot water heater doesn't need electric to heat their water. duh. Others told me their stoves wouldn't work, no electric for the ignitor. I asked them if they tried using a match. another duh.

GSS, I believe the reason our power in Anchorage is so stable is due to the sometimes harsh weather, we just can't be without power, when the temperatures are cold, that means huge problems for property and life and because of this, the system has been built to withstand the weather. However, in contradiction, in rural or bush Alaska, their power isn't nearly as stable and their temperatures are much lower in the interior of Alaska than Anchorage which is near the water and due to this, moderates the temperature to keep us far warmer in the winter compared to interior Alaska, i.e in the winter we are often 40-50+ degrees F. warmer than Fairbanks which is deep in the interior away from water. Speaking for myself, I'm hoping global warming is really happening, Alaska (human beings) could use warmer temperatures and reality is, we are about 20 degrees warmer in the winter than we were experiencing for many winters 50 years ago, but this fluctuation might have nothing to do with mankind, the glaciers have been retreating/melting up here for thousands of years now. Yes, winters are long, summers short, but no so much in Anchorage compared to Barrow, Alaska on the north coast, I'm in south central Alaska.

The problem in the bush is the communities are mostly without industry and few jobs, money very sparse and not enough skilled workers. I've heard stories of some villages loosing power simply because no one took care of the generators, made sure the oil was changed or that they had oil at all. If it wasn't for the oil field money, native associations and the federal government keeping them afloat those cities probably wouldn't exist where as Anchorage is a city of over 300,000 with industry, but truth is, without the oil field we would be much smaller, most of my own work is for the oil industry.

I've never seen the filming of Alaska State Troopers, got a ticket from one some years back though. I have recently been working with them on a project to install some radio equipment in their offices in the court house downtown.
