Posting a picture of safety glasses before starting a thread

Its depressing how many new users ask about where to buy high power lasers without any intention of buying laser glasses. I am just throwing this idea out there but what if it was a rule that one must take and post a picture of their laser glasses before asking for laser buying advice?

I think this would do two things

1. Ensure that we are giving advice to someone who is concerned about safety and has the necessary safety equipment.

2. Reduce the number of "which DX laser should I buy?" threads

Anyone making this type of thread is 9 times out of 10 a person who knows very little about lasers and laser safety. If you just tell them they need safety glasses and then where to get the most powerful laser in their budget it seems like thats just making the problem worse.

The people that make these threads wouldn't read the rules. So the mods will have a lot more work making them post a picture. Also what if the glasses are shipping, theres no harm since the laser will in most cases come after them. Still on YouTube I have seen people with lasers up to 1w with no glasses. You are right, people new to lasers never think they need glasses until it is too late.

Although your intentions are well founded... there
would be a problem responding to a new member
that is only looking for information before he even
decides to get a Laser...
He may only be looking for information...

We cant expect a new member to buy Laser Safety
Goggle/Glasses for every wavelength of Laser before
he has the information to make up his mind as to
which wavelength he will ultimately buy or build...

And who says he didn't borrow a pair of LSG/G for
any proof...

I agree.

Another thing I can suggest to all veterans is to show always the safety glasses in their pictures/movies to increase the responsability in new members... (although many already do it) :)

Yes Jerry needs to calm down a bit it's really only a forum.

I already ordered my ~10 mW "200 mW" pointer from DX which I will be lucky if it even makes a green dot :p It's sitting in customs right now hopefully no issues with it there. It was cheap so whatever. I got my pair of laser glasses from Radiant as recommended by some other posts. I used them while working with my projector at close range and they seem to filter a good chunk of the blue and green out.

Burning and popping might be fun for a bit if it does... I am more into laser projectors than pointers really.

what we should do is, people that sell complete lasers should require a picture of quality glasses with there username written next to it and the date.

i have seen in some FS threads there are numerous 1 time posters buying class 4 lasers and i am sure a high percentage don't have safety glasses

my 2cents

Heh that would work :p My glasses are pretty sweet and if their tested as well as they claim to be than they should be good.

It is true that it would be hard to enforce but we as members could still ask for proof of having safety glasses even if its not a forum wide rule.

This could be easily enforced by any member selling the lasers. This is a good idea not for just the forum but for the sellers own personal liability.

So then what is being thought of would be :

If you are selling a laser to someone add the price of the approved safety glasses and send them too.
Now if the buyer can prove that they have a pair already (you can't force them to use them but that's not your responsibility) then they save the price of the glasses and probably a bit on shipping too.

But on a personal note some of the units might pass through international borders a bit easier if they came with the properly designated protective eyewear. (Not all as can be seen in the Canada Customs thread.)

the buyer wouldn't HAVE to over glasses if it was inconvenient to him theyed just say sorry no glasses no laser. i think its a pretty easy rule and should be encouraged

but saying on a package "high powered laser BUT with safety glasses" its gonna help it get through customs in my opinion but who knows

This part wont work. The laser is illegal...period. Thats why they are seized. If you had a package that said "bomb BUT not armed" its still a bomb. Extreme example I know but it sounded funny when I wrote it. :D
