Portable FAP Red

I called Coherent again today and this time I was told NOT to use the Acetone on the fibers for cleaning. Use only lab grade Methanol. I suspected that.
NOW -- I'm using Dow Corning #340 Silicone heat sink compound between the module and the HS. Has anyone ever had an optic problem using this product in proximity? I read the spec data and it appears that there is a volatile component in it which I think could coat an optic. -- Anyone??
HMike

I ordered some arctic silver 5 -- Specs look better.

I've heard not to use heat sink compounds with lasers because it can migrate to the laser diode, but with a FAP? I don't really have much concern myself, anyone?

This Arctic 5 is mostly silver and is not supposed to migrate, It would have to go a long way to get to the fiber output. By the way, this is not the two part Arctic 5 glue.
I just don't want fumes condensing on the optics. I've become paranoid :-(

Someday, I'll be able to send rep!!!

I ordered that last night. Almost like buying gold!
Will 0.003" thickness be enough? I did lap the heatsink.
HMike
I still can't sent you + rep. I'm too busy to read and rep everything else.

Great, for a single sheet of Indium, I didn't think 20 was bad at all, I bought a few sheets some time back but everything packed away now. On my way to GA tonight, will meet with RedCowboy while down there for two weeks.

Chris -- I finally got my Indium foil today and have mounted an FAP
on the heat sink. I will connect a K thermocouple to monitor my
blower heatsink.
Now tests can begin !!! I retire in two months :-)
HMike

Yay, I've been worried something happened since you have been silent so long.

It takes forever to get the stuff of science from the net.
I need to connect my K probe to the module/heatsink.
Do you have a 445 or 405 laser?
HMike
I'm going to clean the output and then run it open to
measure temperatures with this blower heatsink.

Here it is with the FAP module mounted to the HS with Indium.

There is enough wire to monitor the current with my DC Amp clamp.
I plan to use a dab of Arctic 5 for the temp probe.

I don't have any lasers with me on my way to Afghanistan soon and in Texas processing through an Army base right now, but I do have a 450nm laser at home in Alaska. Looks like everything will fit together nicely in a pointer, I'm just concerned how long the duty cycle can be with that heat sink being so small, even with a fan on it, but as you said, you are not shooting for a long duty cycle.

Chris -- I'll send you the "toy" when you get back -- GOD SPEED to you.
If my heat sink will hold it to about 90 Degrees for 10 seconds, I'll be happy.
I can always make another larger unit. For now, I need to find out what split
and shorted my 78L05 when it only has a 3K ohm load on it.I hope it didn't damage
the PS module although it seems to remain limiting the current to my set point.
Good Luck -- Mike

I removed the PS and found a broken ground connection to the 78L05. I replaced the regulator, checked a bunch of crap and powered it up into a dummy load --- It still seems to work :-) Now to put it all back together.....
Damned perf board circuits........

Spam crap follows. Bastard ------------

I have the laser running now with a MAX current of 34 Amps off the cells. I still want to make the PTH08 module closer to CC rather than CV. I will call TI and ask about that.
I haven't yet run Current vs Temp over time yet but it appears slow to heat up and SLOW to cool with the fan on.
I used a 75 mm FL lens at 25 Amps tonight and it focuses to a point and burns good. I now need to try the fiber cable to see if it will smooth out the 19 point beam. The specs say operating temp is 86 Deg F ??? Thanks to global cooling in this area, I might be able to run this for a few seconds occasionally in the summer.
