The low powered ones had issues ranging from bad alignment to weak gas fill to uneven RF excitation to the stars and phase of the moon are inauspicious and they just don't work out. There are even some that test low on one PSU, but are fine on other PSU's and start out high then go low.

My first laser sometimes does that, (flame) I don't know why it isn't the same every time... Hopefully when I get my power supply done, it will do that every time. :D

I think that to get that instant pop and fire, you need to hit a sweet spot on the board. Mine is white pine and it sometimes takes a moment.

yep that is how mine is too and I am using plywood, sometimes it fires right up and other times it just gets red hot :D nice burn pic Mike

Only type 1 lasers are gone, still have a lot of type 2 tube + ARF transistor+ board lasers that need more work to use! some are every bit as good as these, but need +5+12 and +28 to +38V to run

If I put the tube bench and driver in close proximity, Do I need to retune? Can I shorten the coax?

I'm having a great time with my tubes. Even 5 watts burns stuff with a raw beam --- no lens . What's left??

I wish i knew more about gas lasers, 8Watts for ~110 bucks sounds crazy.
