PHR-805 405nm diodes, replace PHR-803t's

Hey, Greg, maybe you should do a sale on these to untie up your inventory? ;) Haha. I would like one of these but I already ordered a 803T from Hightechdealz :\

I was a little worried when my order was taking a while to ship, but after today, when i openned my package from you i was like :drool:
the "goodies" are schhwweeetttt!! well worth the wait in my opinion, also, couldnt help it, had to use the 445 that was already pressed in right away. I just got done building another 1.4W 445... review thread on it in an hour or so.

again thanks greg! cant wait for those phr-805's

OK Anselm, hate to bother you again! But here is more data - this time I killed a PHR-803t from my personal stash for direct and equal comparison to my 805 tests. I downloaded open office, but just like excel, just can't figure out how to do those darn graphs! Anyway here is the data on the 803t I tested out today:

I figured 805 diode #2 is about 16% more output at 120mA with it's 134mw raw output. Tweak an 805 up to 130-140mA and you've got yourself roughly a 4x blu-ray my friend . That 803t diode in the Blu-M heat sink was getting toasty above 130mA and quite hot once I surpassed 200mA, had to pause several times to allow my HAND to cool down :)

I will do another graph if you like, but it is as easy as marking the data, finding the
"create graph" dialog and stepping through the wizard....

I used a multimeter checking the current the entire time, and the power supply also displayed that same current, and measured the output using the same LPM. I'm sure this may have been a freak 803 diode or an anomaly if you will (maybe someone gave me a 6x instead? lol), keep in mind the thing was blazing hot when I got to 200mA. We're only talking about a total run time of maybe 10 minutes or so to complete the test. Not really a long life. I haven't read every post on LPF but I'm sure this can't be the first time this has happened with a PHR-803t, right? Keep in mind there were a few "kinks" in that power curve along the way to 320mA, which from what I understand these mean the diode is in trouble and you should never leave it set above the "kink."
I ran a 445nm up to 3amps once and it LED'd, then, when I got below 2 amps it lased again. It is still "somewhat" alive even right now, I can feed 1 amp into and get 200-300mw output for a short time then it goes dim again. Odd diode indeed.
On the graph thing, I tried it out, after selecting the data the resulting graph is blank. I haven't been to school for excel or other spreadsheet software usage, but I am fairly competent in computer usage. I'll look at it again and try once more...

there was another member that had a mutant 803. but it didn' last long. nice testing cliff. but one thing i see you didn't test was the life span. any diode can get pushed and look good for a test. but what current can these live at?

I agree Chip, I didn't perform a lifespan test. I have 3 more 805's here, only I don't have a simple way to perform a lifespan test aside from setting it at one current (say 120-140mA?) and leaving it one for an hour or so at a time, and track the on time. If I had a huge heat sink, TEC or fan on it and could monitor temperature, maybe this would fine. I know some of the guys here have some really nice set ups that can do some neat testing of lifespans... with the basic equipment I have, what would be a good way to test lifespan, say, using a Blu-M heat sink, I could set up a fan on it to keep it cool... I want the data to be accurate for all, I have no problem killing a couple more diodes for science. ;)
Maybe I'll have to just test a couple this way at the one current to see - but if it lasts hundreds of hours it may take a while...

since it would be mostly used in pointers closer to real conditons the better. so i would say no to a large heat sink and tec and yes to a little heat sink at room temp.

Thanks for the input Chip, it's good to get a few other's thoughts on things before the killing begins.... I'm still on free diode #3 of 5 so I would have to say you've been MORE than accommodating Greg! I'd gladly $BUY$ many more after I kill off the last ones I have... I'm curiuous about these new diodes as anyone, it would be nice if we could run them and they lasted a hundred or so hours at 140mA....

With little ones in the house, I would be reluctant to ask you to run them unattended :( THAT would be bad - pure and simple ! Just be careful, in the name of science, or any other name !
 
Now a days all my laser hi-jinks takes place in my shed outside, locked from the little one. Remember Wile E. Coyote's little shop he worked in on all his anti-Road Runner devices and concoctions? That's my shed :na:

THAT is good to hear ! NOT that I doubted for a second, your safety ethics - it's just that sometimes folks forget, etc....My "little ones" are 27, and almost 19.....so I have stuff running ALL the time, especially since the 27 year old is out of the house, things are safe.... hehehehehe ! I STILL have to do arial beam shots, though - as we have some "spare cats" that inhabit my garage (I trapped them, and got them fixed, shots, etc...) and they LOVE to get in the way of EVERYTHING ! When the blig (and STOOOOOPID !) orange one started to look interested in the 25Watt blue beam from my last projector, I had to yell at it awfully loud :gun:
 
i also don't doubt your safety practice but to be on the side of cautious i will say that since you are in a shed (wood i assume) that you should use a beam dump if you plan on doing any life span testing.

You mean one of those carbon beam terminator thingys? Probably wouldn't be a bad idea, my shed IS wood framed - (built it myself), and hours of hot laser light hitting it might not be good - of course I wouldn't have the beam focused tight for that kind of test. Still not a bad idea....
