Well I finally got around to doing some tests on the open can 803t diode here, as well as the normal one. Well, the tests yielded some interesting results, but I think it warrants further investigation.

It is also important to note that these power levels are WITHOUT optics.

The open can, at 100.4mA, averaged around 102mW
The regular, at 100.4mA, averaged about 94mW.

In an ideal setting, I would have done the testing the exact same way. Unfortunately, the open can was already in an aixiz module (still no lens, the completed box style may be for sale soon), and the closed can was just the bare diode with factory heat sink. So, It was easier for me to get all the light onto the sensor from the bare diode than it was with the open-can in the aixiz module.

Discuss. 8-)

That seems pretty duh to me. But do the 803 sleds have opencans AND closed cans at random? Or is the closed can the other 360 sled? :-/

Gooey started the can opener trend [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] Mine should be here today, hopefully.

Nope, all the 405 diodes that I know of thus far are closed can. I bought the fancy can opener tool from thorlabs so I've been making my own open cans so to speak. 8-)

~8% is an interesting increase...

But what happens if a tiny invisible speck of dust settles on the laser chip? I would love to try this, but i'm kinda worried.

Remember, it is protected behind a lens. We use open can reds all the time.

Peace,
dave

Plus, Evemn though it was my first successful harvest, when i took the open-cn red from the Sony Optiarc drive i bought, the "chamber" between the diode and the first lens in the drive's sled was not completely sealed.. The diode could have been subject to dust right in the drive....

I made a simple (ugly) clean box with lexan. A few pc fans and heppa filters. Prior to any workings with any open cans, I make sure the door for my arms is closed,  and switch the fans on for 1/2 hour. 1 fan draws fresh filtered air, 2nd is filtered exhaust, and the 3rd is an agitator to stir up any clinging particles. If you think of all the dust and crap in the air that is visible with a nice green beam, just think what has landed on the chip even with a brief exposure. A few years back I took on the challenge of innoculating my own spawn jars (growing mushrooms). Even when all precautions are put in place, spraying the area with alcohol+water and Lysol, latex gloves, alcohol on the arms and sterilizing in an autoclave, spores and junk would still find a way to contaminate 30% of the total jars. It is very difficult to keep out that of which you cannot see ;)

To be honest I really dont think the lasing material in these diodes is as fragile as we all think. I really dont think dust will be an issue at all.

Theres been multiple occasions where I've experimented with 'useless' (ie lower power or IR) diodes out of all the sleds I've harvested, just to test the durability of the die itself. I would break the tiny wires going from the anode to the die, and then hook it up to a driver. Then, I would actually make the connection with my screwdriver (touch screwdriver to pin and lasing die at the same time) and they would still lase. It actually took physical scratching with the screwdriver before they turned into an LED. So, in this case, I really think dust and potential debris is almost a non-issue. With all electronics, one has to handle the diode with care, and obviously try not to touch the exposed components. But in the end I still think our biggest enemy, as is true with most electronics, is heat.

Yeah, but if tiny speck of dust on the diode window make me worried.... :)

I just want to be careful.

I am sure removing the Can would increase power, especially the window.
A member tested this on a 16x Red Diode earlier; Canless puts out more power. (Couldn’t find the thread)

In order to get an accurate reading, the test needs to perform on the same Diode.

I tested the outputs of 4x 803T Diodes at 125mA installed in the AixiZ style modules using the SAME clear plastic lens; the results are so far off. :o The modules were placed on top of a CPU heatsink; the power was very steady BTW.

Diode 1 =105mW
Diode 2 =100mW
Diode 3 =96mW
Diode 4 =87mW

I’d imagine dust won’t spell instant death, but the life of the diode would surely be affected. Without clean rooms, the hard drive in your pc would not last half as long. Even though a HD is magnetic storage and has moving parts, dust becomes an abrasive. I don’t know how hot the chip on a diode gets, but id imagine most of the diodes used here (higher powers) will burn any foreign material which has landed on it. Now you have carbon and whatever else was produced as the particles change state. My wife was sitting close to my desk one day having a cigarette, I didn’t think but I had a PS3 diode facing up. When I went to install the diode, I checked the facet as I always do with magnifier and there was already little droplets sitting on it. I know there is a difference between smoke and dust, but it was almost overlooked. That diode is awaiting my can opener; there is no way to get the smoke off. When I harvest any expensive diodes (6x) or open cans, I take the precautions just to be safe.

I'm not really worried about damaging the die.. More about something landing on it, and then being burned up when you turn the laser on.. That could leave a nasty spot..

However, an open can PHR803T + a 405nm AR coated glass lens would make for an amazing lazor! I might just try...

haha thanks gooey I wasn't even aware of this tool. It's strange being tempted by a $130 tiny can-opener.
;D

I know. for $130 it should at least be able to open a soup can, too! :-[
