PHR-803T HD-DVD diodes GB# 3 <CLOSED>

Dead..... :'( no purple light!!!aaaaahhhh.... flexmod1 drive at 125mA and no go... but the drive is only putting out about 3 volt, with a 9 volt input...... not even getting warm or a little glow.... these are sad dark days..... :P

This neither seem right nor is it enough voltage for the diode to lase. The diode needs about 5V. If the driver is only giving you 3V something is wrong.

Peace,
dave

thats what i'm thinking...... "runs off to his lab" multimeter!!!!! right bluray take 2.............

"runs back to forum" 5.5v at 130mA..... nothing coming out..... no light.... no heat..... dead as roadkill... sucks when you buy something that doesn't work and theres no warrenty :P ;D

What happened to 3V at 125mA?

Your driver is now putting out 5.5V at 130mA?!? :-?

Peace,
dave

That would be me... was using the same driver for a red... so i set it back down... 3v?? uuuummm i might not have read right...

;D ;D Less tequila -- More double checking ;D ;D

I've tested four diodes so far and one diode died strangely while (almost) overpowering them with 191mA. Another burned for 15 minutes at 55mA and the power dropped to 50%, this must have been a faulty one from the start.

doubt it was faulty from the start Zom. It was most likely either not heatsinked properly, or there were driver issues. Remember, These things weren't made to be blu-ray burners... We just like 'em that way.

It was heat sinked well enough (Aixiz head mounted in vise). There were also no driver problems because there is no driver. I used a very stable lab power supply and a 5W series resistor for this. Working at 55mA is too low if you look at the CW spec in the data sheet (the Sharp one). It probably wouldn't even have worked in the blu-ray reader. The only thing truly out of my control is accidental static discharge, from before I was weareing the strap, although I don't see how static damage can hurt it... delayed?

Sometimes they just fail for NO apparent reason.

The blame game helps no one.

Peace,
dave

true daguin, although my hypothesisis that these diodes arent made to run at these currents.

also, I dont know the details, but there was a thread around here somewhere where this guy killed 8 diodes, before they found out that the powersupply was the fault. not HIS powersupply, but for some reason they stated not to use a power supply. I donno, just skimmed through that topic once.

regards,

amk

anyhow... I just killed a diode today.... :'(

I've got hands-on experience with several DIY power supplies, and I now of the danger of line ripple, transients and digital distortion (on the newest ones). My main power supply at the moment is clear of all these things, and I know that, for one, because I often measure circuits with the oscilloscope, powered with it, and I see a nice straight distortion-free line on the tube.

lol yea, you know more about this Power supply stuff than I do, Im good with the old fashioned LM317 hooked up to a resistor lol.

sorry to hear your diodes died.. :'( :'(

The thread says closed. Will it (or a deal for roughly the same price) be re-instated anytime soon, that anyone knows of? Thanks.

i probably wont run another PHR gb, because:

1) too much trouble
2) So many other cheaper deals for em in GB section.
