PHR-803T Diode @ 185ma (138mw)

Well after frying the driver and diode from my Dorcy 6x upgrade project I decided to put the original PHR diode back in place for now until my replacement 6x comes in. So it was off to fellow forum member roSSco's house for some laser surgery. Out of laziness we decided not to un-bridge the circuit on my flexdrive V2 and just turned it down as low as it would go which ended up being 185ma. We both figured the PHR diode wouldn't last very long at that amount of current but to our surprise it actually held. I quickly put the flashlight back together and we took a measurement thru the LSP Glass Blu-ray lens I had and it topped out at 138mw on roSSco's LPM! We took another measurement without the lens and got 180mw! Then one last measurement with an Aixiz acryllic and got 124mw. (I figure a 405 lens would give me ~158ma if I had one to test with :-) ) I am most impressed by this particular PHR-803T diode. It will be short lived though as my replacement 6x should be at my house tomorrow and I will be back in the 200mw club... lol

my personal pen unit runs ar 135 mw with acrylic for almost a year now
i love 803's they are my favorate

oh mine is a adj 38-150 ma driver rkcstr its maxed out

Hey Cenobite9, my Core Bluray , (made by John Lawson btw), is doing about 175 mW with a jayrob mounted glass 405 lens and it is doing fine with months of daily use! It's a favorite laser here! I have no brighter bu-ray so I use it a lot, and I just love it! And OH yeah, it's a PHR!!! -Glenn

lol john a pen? it must get hot as hell right?

yours,
Albert

I can't believe this.
PHR running on 185mA?
My PHRs died above 110mA.

You guys are so lucky.

no actually i have made several pen units at 150 ma all all ok as long as you keep it at 45 seconds or less lol

45 seconds?
My diodes died after 15 seconds duty cycle.
Last diode died at 125mA after 30 seconds (15 seconds duty cycle).

I'm I cursed or what?

^cursed :D

I'm tempted to crank up ther current on my two 803's now!

I think you must be doing something wrong :/

At first, I thought desoldering was problem, but I use normal blob method and I do everything as same as everyone else do.
Then I thought driver is problem.
But I use LM317T driver with 47uF capacitor and silicon diode and diode is protected.
I use dummy load to check current and current is fine.

Anything else?

Hey ReNNo, instead of using the blob method I used Jayrob's method. He uses a small pair of snips to remove the PCB and ribbon cable from around the pins of the LD. It was not easy, as you know how small the LD is, my hand kept cramping from trying to hold it steady.

I would use this method but can't find that small snips.
If you know where to find it please tell me.

I do it fast.
PHR diode has more layers but I do it 2-3 times but really fast.
I see nothing wrong in my blob method.

I've found these snips on e-bay for $17.
I'm going to order them.

I have found it easier to go ahead and press the diode into a module then use a vice to hold the module/diode in place and then use a de-solder iron and small needle nose pliers to remove the circuit board from the back of the diode.

I think i have used about 30 803's all at 125-or-150 ma if they die they die within a few days but after a few days if they are still alive they seem to last a while i havent tried rkcstr method on phrs yet buy since i just traded a car amp for 7 more sleds and drives its on baby lol
