Perception of 561nm differs?

Hi all,

having some luck and an Ebay auction went well I managed to get my hands on a Melles Griot 561nm laser (model 85-YCA-010).

A really nice laser with a pencil-thin beam (~0.5mm @ aperture) and some strange color :D...

But is it possible that the perception of this wavelength extremly differs between people?

For me and my son the color is still GREEN (okay - Lime)... for my wife and my daughter the color is pure YELLOW...

Anyone sharing the same experience?

Nice find! 561 is a rare color and you should be proud to own such a beauty! :)

Honestly, everyone's eyes are different which means they will each perceive colors differently. Hec, some people see 635 as orange-red, while some see it as totally red(I've done that experiment)! If you shine a yellow laser next to it, it should help them see it as a more greenish color. Shinning your reds may even work, but not totally sure.

Lucky lucky. I want 561nm so bad. Will be my next laser venture I guess just so hard to find them used and at a reasonable price. Would kill for a portable one above 5mw.

You can get a 561 GLP <5mw's for the same price as a yellow. Catch is, the two following requirements need to be met.

1) Have $350(not including shipping & other fees)
2) Get 4-5 other members to purchase one as well. CNI won't build only one as it's not cost-efficient for them :)

When i saw 561 at selem i thought it looked pretty yellow
 
Well, if people see a blue dress as gold and the other way around then I can imagine people seeing 561nm as either green or yellow. I haven't seen 561nm in person, but from what I've seen in pictures I'd say it's a little more yellow than green.

I showed 3 other people my 589nm and one said it was more orange than yellow (actually "golden") and the rest of us thought it was more like 75% golden and 25% orange for the beam. The spot is more yellow/golden/white if I remember correctly. Regardless it didn't look like the sun either way.
 
Everyone sees color slightly differently, as well as based on where you're showing it. Lighting conditions and other cues that your eyes take from the surrounding area will change the way you see certain colors, especially odd colors like that better in between main colors. Personally I find 561 is quite green in the daylight but quite yellow in the dark. I also own one of those yca-10s which I recently rebuilt from the ground up to make it work correctly. They're quite phenomenal when you have a matching driver/get it configured right.

Some women have a 4th cone cell for orange. It's unlikely that this is the case, but taking that into account "yellow" and "orange" may have extremely different meanings to some observers. A simple test for this is to show them the laser and then the image of the laser you took and ask them if it is a waaaay different color
I do have a friend who has "bluer" vision in one eye with no previous trauma to the retina. This made me more accepting of the theory that some people see colors differently, though in his case it sounds like an atypical number of cones in either eye

Yes --everybody's eyes are unique/different however small or large those differences are.

Recent, studies however, strongly suggest that human perception of color is controlled much more by our brains than by our eyes and there are relatively small but clear and significant, differences between males and females in the hue sensations elicited by almost the entire spectrum. Generally, males required a slightly longer wavelength to experience the same hue as do females.

"Researchers have found differences in individual color perception since the 1950s, using hue discrimination and color-matching tests.
Some of these differences correlate with gender; for example, on average men perceive shades as being somewhat lighter than women do, and on average men cannot distinguish different shades as precisely. There are also cultural differences; there's pretty robust evidence that language can affect color perception. Chartreuse is approx 560nm --color chartreuse is precisely halfway between green and yellow; 50% green and 50% yellow. " It is one of the tertiary colors of the HSV color wheel, also known as the RGB color wheel. Another name for this color is chartreuse green" from Color 15 - Chartreuse - Information

561nm from what I see on the internet looks green with a hint of yellow to me. Yellow starts around 570nm, 589 is gold and 594 is orange. They'd need a 575-580nm for a true yellow.

Well technically 589 is a true yellow as it falls inside the yellow spectrum, but you can see the start of orange appearing slightly.

There are some lasers in the range you listed above. Some dye lasers output @ 577nm IIRC.
