Peak Power <50mW Class IIIa from Amazon

So I thought I'd put my pointer to the baloon test tonight, and in under 3 seconds, it pops a standard Red Robin baloon, when aiming the beam at the black text on the baloon. I was quite shocked. Though I don't believe it's a 50mW, it's probably stronger than a 5mW.

All in all, though, I don't think the match test is even worth trying.

Strange, it popped a balloon, amazon ripped of 10's prolly a total of a 100 people with that dreadfully weak laser. You must of gotten a good one because now they might be getting in troble for their past sales. This was my very first laser, and it also was my very first laser rip off. Anyways your laser could be 30-40mW if it popped a balloon, depending on how far away you were pointing your laser from the balloon.

It sounds like the new one isnt too far from spec, popping ballons is a good sign. These ppl most likely have access to lasers of different powers, and may even save a few 'good ones' to ship to ppl that arent happy.
I am curious as to what it is outputting, IF you are interested as well, I would be willing to test your laser on my LPM free of charge, Ill even pay to ship it back to you, but this is entirely up to you:D

I appreciate the offer, but I must decline. I don't believe, given the impressive list of lasers you have, that you would want it for anything other than to satisfy your own curiosity and to inform me of the outcome; however, when I think of shipping the thing out to you, I have a hard time coming to grips with the fact that this experiment would part me from my laser for an excessively undesirable period of time. I have become rather fond of my pointer, and to be more than 2 days without it would be difficult.

Thank you again,

Chad

Lol, you sound just like me:D Thats why I had to get my own LPM. I completely understand, I wouldnt want to be without my lasers for even 2 hours never mind a few days.

nice vocab.

Without trying to seemingly resurrect a thread long dead, I'd like to report on a little experiment my friend and I tried the other day. We each have th is same laser and frequently go "lazing" at night. We have started experimenting with our pointers at different distances. The first of these experiments was 1.1 mile away. Though there was no fine dot, you could see the beam the entire way and the light was so strong it would cast shadows. It absolutely blew us away and left me seeing spots (I know, I should take better percaussions). We started thinking that we could easily double that distance and still see the green emission.

Well, we tried it again the other night, and sure enough, the little green light was the brightest light on the hill. Only we didn't do it at 2.2 miles. Rather, we attempted this feat at 13.2 miles! It was amazing! In fact, it was so bright, I felt like I shouldn't be looking at the light for anything longer than moments at a time. I have no doubt I can double the distance and throw the beam a length greater than that of the Boston Marathon (or any other marathon, for that matter). These are amazing little devices. I'll post the video when my buddy emails it to me.

Ciao

Awesome! I would love to have a friend that's into lasers to do that kind of stuff with. Looking into the beam at 13 miles would not be eye damaging. 13 miles ~ 21000meters. Even if your pointer has incredible divergence of .8mrad that would give you a spot size of about 1680cm. If your laser really is 50mw with a divergence of .8mrad then at 13 miles the power per cm^2 would be .00002mw, so it's not dangerous, but if it's uncomfortable then you probably shouldn't.

Though I felt it may be too bright, it wasn't so uncomfortable so as to compel me to overt my eyes for any duration. But it was by FAR brighter than anything on the horizon. It was like getting lazed in the eye with one of the old school red laser pointers you get in gumball machines from 50 yards away, I'd say, though it's hard to compare the brightness seen from a red laser with that of a green.

Yeah, get your friends involved. It's way fun.
