Open Can with TEC (20' Match Light Video pg. 5)

I commend you on the lipo alarm...a great way to keep your batteries safe. ;)

I am curious...how difficult was it to remove the peltier from the heatsink.

Also it looks like the heatsink you mounted the peltier to came from an older graphics card. I have one that looks exactly like it..

The peltier came off pretty easy using a flat blade x-acto knife and working around the edges first. Then just scrape clean. The adhesive was kind of soft compared to Arctic silver...
The little heatsink is here:
http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/HS-144/HEATSINK-1.33-X-1.14-X-0.37-/1.html
Perfect fit for that peltier. And the little blower fan is perfect too!
Gazoo, I have another question for you. For the Meredith modules, especially in this kind of a set up, is it necessary to use a little Arctic silver compound between the block and the module? And the 5.6mm adapter just sits against the bottom of the module as well. Is it ok just with the metal to metal contact? I have not used any thermal compound in these two areas. (less messy) What do you think?
Thanks,
Jay

Re: Open Can with TEC

Use it anywhere you want to transfer temperature. ;)

Re: Open Can with TEC

Jay,
I don't use compound in those areas. I did once in the module where the adapter sits and I don't think there was a huge benefit. This was with a closed can diode. Now I will admit if I ever get the guts to run an open can again with 600ma's then I would put some compound in the module and around the module. But for ~400ma's or less I don't think it is worth the mess. Plus I have a fear as the compound sets up, some residue could get in the diode. And regular Arctic Silver compound does go through a set up period according to their website.

Thanks for the info... :) I may try something similar to what you have done..it is an awesome project.. :)

Thanks for getting back to me on that question Gazoo. And it feels good that you said it is an awesome project! Thank you. I did put a lot of work into this thing. And of course, I had a lot of help and guidance. I just finished it. It was a very tight fit with all of the things going on in here...plus the two batteries! I have some close up pics of the final wiring:
ice box 1.jpg

The little lipo alarm is great! It shines bright blue when it senses full charge, Cyan - very good, Green - good, Yellow/Amber - low warning, and Red - Batteries Low (70%)
ice box 2.jpg

The two batteries barely fit inside!

I went ahead and left the LD current at 416mA for now. And turned the peltier up to 516mA just to make sure the 'ice box' stays cool. I guess that is what I am calling it... The 'Ice Box'

Now just waiting for the Laser Power Meter from DDL's GB and I can do some real testing!
Thanks again for all the help! From everybody...

Re: Open Can with TEC

Very nice... :) I did manage to remove the peltier from the heatsink. The other heatsink I have is very identical to the one you purchased from ALL, so I am going to give it a try. I have the fan that attaches directly to it but it is 12 volts.

The 5 volt fans I purchased from ALL are too big to fit inside the heatsink the peltier was attached to, but I would still like to use them. Fortunately they will attach to the smaller heatsink. So my build will be different from yours and bigger too, and will be mounted in a plastic case. I don't have the tools I need to mount everything in a metal case like you did, but I can implement some of your ideas.. ;D

Jay, that looks amazing. I suppose I've found my next project. ;D
I wonder just how high you'll be able to push it...???

LOL! I got a visual on the jaw drop. I am pretty proud of it after all that work. Flick the toggle switch and a nice quiet, smooth sounding fan comes on along with the blue light on the lipo alarm, and of course, the awesome red beam! This thing is a three ring circus! And knowing that the peltier is cooling my 'Ice Box'. I'm going to keep it at 416mA until I get the power meter. But when (not if) I fry the open can, it will be easy to replace it! In fact, I have two more 112D's sitting on the shelf! Thanks for the compliments...and of course, your help on this. This project was a great learning experience!

Re: Open Can with TEC

A learning experience for us as well.
You deserve to be proud of that, I imagine there are countless hours in it, and with a finished (We never really do 'finish' do we? :D ) product it shows.

Re: Open Can with TEC

That's a very nicely designed portable!

416 mA and TEC, must produce quite some output... i'm looking forward to power measurements on this unit.

Thanks Benm, I just ordered a Mini Temp Infrared Thermometer with Laser from e-bay so that I will be able to monitor the temperature of the module. I am looking foreword to testing too! My Laser Power Meter should be coming soon! I will definitely post some of my findings...

Re: Open Can with TEC

Wow! This is going to sound hard to believe...I just lit a black tipped DX match at 21' with the Ice Box! I did it again and counted the time...4 seconds! I think that it could have even been focused better. Man you guys, you've helped me create a monster here!...

Re: Open Can with TEC

thats pretty awesome man!

You should have no problem lining up that beam across a field or somthing, haha... the problem i have with the dorcy is how it is not flat so it always points up.... i might make a foam mounting block for it or somthing.

Looks awesome!

Now I am getting jealous... ;D I think I best get busy on mine. :D

Re: Open Can with TEC

Hey Gazoo, I went to Newegg.com to buy more 112D's and it looks like they don't sell them anymore:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Suggested&Description=27-129
I put an open can diode in an MXDL with heatsink @ 323mA. Fried it. I think because I was turning it on and off too quick when I was adjusting for long focus. I'm putting my other extra one back in the MXDL and want to buy a couple more just for stock because I really like these diodes! It looks like they have 212D or 115D. Which one do you think I should try?
