I think the diode in it would probably be able to handle 600ma easy, it can probably even be pushed to 800ma.

It is true it takes a lot more current to get the same mw's out of them than the SenKat diode, and the comparison graph Daedal posted of the phaser diode shows this. The open can is very much like the phaser diode as far as that graph goes, but I believe the open can is better based on Daedal's reports.

Gazoo, so I'm browsing around DX looking for a possible host for the plan of using a 7135 with 1-18650 for an open can diode. I was just about to buy this one:

And then it hit me! I'm thinking about how I would have to get it in hand before I could take it apart and start modifying it. I'm thinking, hmmm, I will need to machine a heatsink similar to the MXDL heatsink...and then, the light finally came on in my head! So simple! I already know and have the MXDL, heatsinks, lens caps, everything! (Plus they are only $12 bucks) The simple answer is to just slap the MXDL body into the lathe and drill it out just enough to fit the diameter of the 18650! Don't know why it took so long to come to me, but now I have my next little project! And, as you know, I have 20 AMC7135 drivers so, I think this will probably be a good little (and easy to do with a lathe) modification of the MXDL!... Hmmm, 400mA would be cool (I mean HOT). I guess the 700mA ones would be too much...350mA should be nice!!
P.S. Please let me know if there is any other thing I need to build into this circuit besides the cap and the silicon diode at the LD. I mean, I know the current will be @ 350, but will the voltage to the LD be ok?

You don't need the silicon diode either since the DX 7135 is already polarity protected... :) All you need is the capacitor.

The voltage drop across any device is determined by the internal resistance of the device being powered. I went over that before earlier.lol So the voltage going to the diode will be perfectly ok. In other words for example, it does not matter which current regulator you are using to supply the current to the diode. The voltage drop across the diode will be the same whether you are using the 317 adjusted for 350ma's, or the 7135. Hope that makes sense..

I never look at the voltage being applied to my laser diodes anymore...only if I am curious. Best to always think current.. ;)

Thanks Gazoo...I am the first to admit that I don't know anything about electronics. (I know just enough to know that I should ask somebody!) But I am having fun learning! I knew that you are using the AMC drivers and I guess I was too lazy to try and find the thread where we had discussed it before...

Well I got a little bored today and decided to push the Ice Box a little. So, I turned it up to 586mA to see what it would put out...

Almost scary! I got a reading of 365mW with a peak of 395mW! This is with a Meredith glass lens. Phew!... But I like the Ice Box too much to leave it there. If you saw my match light video shown in the first post of this thread, you will understand my reasoning. I mean, a 20' match light in less than 3 seconds @ 416mA... That's alright with me...


Edit: Now at 450mA's and a steady 316mW's. I think with TEC cooling I can run it a little higher than normal...

He...he...Jay you definitely have me beat. I knew you would do it...lol. I am waiting on some funds and then I am going to try to catch up to you. I only have one open can right now and I don't want to kill it. But isn't 350mw's nice.. ;D I am not sure why you have big variation in the peak and average power, maybe as your diode heats up the mw's is going down? Anyway I agree...keep it around 400ma's.

Well, you actually did this Gazoo...I mean, with that power of suggestion of yours! After all, I learned about the open can diodes from you! Not to mention many other factors that went into this build. But there were so many other great thoughts here as well. I have to mention a_pyro_is and his excellent write up on the LM317. You already knew the Ice Box would put out this kind of power. But I had to see for myself! I think that it peaked at the 395mW mark as soon as I flicked it on. It was pointing right dead center. Then, it settled in at 365mW. But yeah....I knew you would see the post, and I just wanted to beat your 350mW! Ha Ha! I already turned it back down so it would last longer. Keep an eye on my MXDL open can! It should be interesting...

I made a new host out of a 2 C cell LED light and powered it with 2 123's. It still puts out 5.25v but can put out a sustained 720mA. :o

I put every small resistor I have in parallel and it's running @ 560mA w/o any problems. ;D

It was able to easily light a match @ 20'. :o

It's an open can from an LG 20x lightscribe drive.

I did have a couple of diodes from Lite-On drives before I switched to the pioneer 18X drive, but they are in the grave yard. The reason I want to try 20X again is to find out how long it will last being pushed with 600ma's... ;D I am looking to find out if there is any difference in the open can diodes too.

I'll second that! Please let us know. These open cans are amazing! Hmmm...20X vs 18X, maybe the diode is better yet...

I had a gift card. :D

The diode was easy to extract. Simply pop it off of the mount with a jewelers screw driver. Then twist the cast housing with two pair of needle nosed pliers. It just falls out. ;)I prefer this to cutting due to the possibility of contaminating the exposed diode.

The new host I mentioned has 3 huge washers and a brass insert for heatsinking. I have ran it for >1 minute several times and it just barely gets warm! I need a power meter! ;D

Gnarly... Is that an AixiZ module with some brass bushings? Or, something else?

I discovered that an Aixis module fits inside of a 3/8" air hose coupler with some filing on the inside with a rat tail file. I also used one for my Dorcy mini. ;)
