Omicron Laserage Laserprodukte GmbH of Rodgau, Germany, has begun volume production of direct green (515 nm) diode lasers specifically for biotechnology applications. The devices offer numerous advantages over conventional argon gas lasers and diode-pumped solid-state lasers, the company said. With their direct analog modulation up to 500 MHz, they need no optoacoustic modulator, resulting in smaller, more cost-effective devices. They have greater power efficiency (the Luxx diode lasers have an optical output power of 25 mW while consuming only 5 W), leading to a longer lifetime. They also feature system readiness in less than two minutes. In the company’s Luxx and Phoxx laser series, the new 515-nm diode laser will replace diode-pumped solid-state lasers of the same wavelength.
 





0.5% efficiency? blergh....
Also, I suspect that harvesting one of their biomeasurement devices might be too expensive for most of us.

It is still very good news, it feels like we can almost reach and touch these new green diodes,
just give it another few weeks or so...

The people doing the medical stuff can't complain. It's over 100 times more efficient than argon, for many orders of magnitude less space.

More efficient, but less raw power. 25mW isn't going to be useful for many types of procedures.

LOOOL consuming only 5 W nice laser pen you got there ! but why the 10AH battery ?

5W input isn't all that much. Many (most?) 445nm models take more power.

- and I guess this is why :)

Presumably they're busting their arses to just get this diode shipped and sold in some sort of quantity, before Nichia et al release diodes capable of higher power, at a twentieth of the power consumption.
