o-like 200mw red laser power

I received my laser from o-like, and it will make black plastic or rubber smoke and leave a mark on dark colored papers.

However, I've heard that lasers this strong will sting if pointed at skin. I've focused it perfectly on my skin and I can't feel it at all. Am I just too dang white?
 





How can I make this burn better when focused at infinity? The beam seems to be something like half a centimeter around, not really what I was expecting.

I haven´t tested to burn my skin with the dilda, but it MUST work, because I´ve done it several times with my 200mW greenie and the dilda burns a lot better if correctly focused ;)

Skin reflects red light a lot i think.

What I really want to do is be able to pop balloons faster at a distance. I want to cause some trouble at my local car dealer =P

Nah, I won't pop any balloons I haven't paid for, but really, I'd rather not have to focus.

Skin does not absorb very much red or IR light.
You can see this for yourself if you shine your laser onto your hand in the dark... you will see that much of the light passes through.

If you want to deform your skin, green and violet are the way to go.

Also, the large beam diameter you see when focused at infinity is what gives the laser such low divergence. If the beam were thinner at the aperture, you would not be able to focus the laser at long distance.
If you want to burn at longer distances, you will need more power.
Look in the pro shop for LarryDFW and Jayrob's high power lenses. They will give you ~25-30% more power and the beam will be tighter at the aperture. Divergence will still be good and the lenses are compatible with the Dilda (new and old).

Maybe you are right, I wasn´t able to focus it cause my skin is reflecting the red light too much. Second thing is that lasers are at worst at burning colors similar to their wavelength.

The beam on my laser seems to be the size of the aperture, which makes me wonder if I'm losing a bunch of power on the inside of the lens assembly.

Any optic will cause some loss, but the hi-power lenses minimize losses. If your laser is doing ~200mW, with the hi-power lens you can expect 230-240mW... maybe more.

It is normal that the beam is the size of the aperture. The optic in the "dildas" is composed of a 3-element glass AR coated lens.
These 3 lenses cause more loss, but it is what gives the beam it's nice, round shape and low divergence.

The hi-power lenses use a different lens. They are single element and have a shorter focal length and wider surface area to collect the most light possible.
Beam specs will still be good, but the beam will be more elliptical with the hi-power lens.

I've got a Hi-power 650nm coated lens from Larry on the way. If you'd like I can take some pictures and power comparisons for you once I get everything set up.

I use Larry's 405-G-1 assembly for my high power violets.

I actually just got some balloons, and it can't pop a balloon at 10 feet even if I mess with the focus. Was my laser vastly overrated? Supposed to be 180-220mW with the included batteries.
 
Even at a couple feet away, it seems like it barely pops even really high pressure balloons.
 
I popped balloons with my old style 200mw red and it could pop balloons from 30ft away! have you tried a black dot on the balloons?
 
What I to focus well is point it on a wall and move the focus ever so slightly till the dot is it's smallest possible size, then move the laser back the width of the balloon(so the focus point is sitting right on the side of the balloon), then tape the balloon to the wall, turn on the laser and point it at the balloon and I get instant POP!
