NUBM44 beam divergence

If wanting to achieve maximum efficiency for eg. burning/cutting/engraving which would be a better choice:

1. To get a beamexpander which would make less power come out of the lens but it would be focused on a smaller area.

Or

2. To leave it with just a g2 glass lens which would have a bigger dot but more power towards the surface which we are pointing towards.

I´m going to guess that it`s probably better to get a beamexpander.
What do you guys say? :wave:

Well that depends, if you're specifically asking about efficiency, then you'd get more output power with roughly the same amount of precision (depending on distance I guess) without the expander, it's my understanding that more optics has an effect of more power loss, albeit a pretty small loss.

There's a third choice perhaps. A wider lens with a longer focal length. Let the beam expand a little. With the wider lens you'll be able to concentrate the laser light into a smaller spot.

When you increase the width of the input beam, it is true that the beam waist decreases. But be aware that so does the Rayleigh length. This means that more care will have to be taken into focusing the laser. Also bare in mind that you are using multimode diodes so even when expanded these won't focus too great.

I voted no expander as I don't think it is worth it for laser your purposes. You'll have lower tolerance on focusing and you won't get as great as a spot as you are probably hoping for. The expander will help, but better to stick with the G2 IMO.

I don't get the reasoning behind using a poll to get people's opinions on a question of either or. A simple thread asking for an opinion would work much better and a tally of the poll results would never get you the correct answer you are looking for. If you are using the NUBM44 for very close work, it should be focused well enough to cut through thin metal. If you want to use it at a farther distance, the answer will depend on how far away is your target.

THe OP has to indentify much more clearly and precisely/specificlly, what he wants to do and parameters pertaining to what he wants to do materials, distances, end result desired and so on.
