Hey, just had a quick look at the site and im quite amazed. Iv always loved lasers. I jumped into the deepend the other day by taking apart my laser, looks like iv burned the driver out :cryyy: but iv got my hands on another one and im going to take abit more care with this one.

iv got one of these http://www.megalaseruk.com/images/star-laser-set.jpg

i was just wondering if its possable to turn these up to be able to burn electrical tape, iv got a problem at work with a rolled up ball of insulation tape blocking a duct. if not where would be a good place to buy parts to be able to build one that would be powerfull enough todo the job.

thanks pete

Hi Peter and welcome to the Forum.

There's loads of great info on here. May take a while to unearth but that search button sure is handy!

Always good to see new UKers taking an interest.

Pot modding is the term for, 'turning up', your laser and is not always recommended. Much easier, often cheaper, but certainly more fun to build your own! (Check my sig. I can supply parts and do some assembly for you if you need.)

I must say that choosing a laser to clear a piece of insulating tape from a pipe is not the first thought I'd have but it is one option!

Enjoy your time here and read loads. If you have questions after you've read as much as you can then just ask. Folks are much happier to help those who try and help themselves. ;)

Let the fun begin...

hey pete, nice to see more UKer's on the forum!

IMO the google search button is more effective than the search button on the site.. it brings back better results.

pot modding is dangerous if you care about the laser, but if its cheap and you don't really care about it then hey give it a shot, see what it can do (it will probably burn out if turned up too much).

if you want someone to build you a laser and you want it in a kit then i would get a kit off jayrob and let morgan build it, trust me hes a nice guy :D

And hes in the uk so it'll be quick, and his prices are cheap!

hes just posted mine today so hopefully it will be here tomorrow.

stuart :)

Welcome to LPF! Make sure to read around, there's lots of great information to be found here.

Keep in mind the laser will need to be focusable and at least 100 mW in power to be able to cut through black tape.

Welcome to the forum.
Looks like you found some "closer" friends already!
Good Luck, and I look forward to reading some of your posts.
(Especially if you get that tape out of there)
You are going to need some serious power.
If it is balled up, better do a search for CO2:D J/K That's way to dangerous for a beginner, but you could always study up on it.

Welcome to the forum! It may not be feasable to clear a blocked duct with a laser. Even if you got a CO2 system aimed down the duct, the beam would release smoke in large quantities from the tape ball, this smoke would soon block the beam, and soon stink out the building. Could start a fire in the duct work. Maybe stick a vacuum hose down the duct and grab the tape ball by vacuum ...

Howdy and welcome to the forum  have fun and be safe !
well lets see as long as you arn't looking for a 1.21 giga watt laser diode or liquid cooled heatsinks I may be able to help you with a few parts and tools, give me a pm.
