Diode temperature limiting would be a nice thing to have if you put it in portable hosts. I've never seen it either, though its not very difficul to build electronically... probably just a matter of mechanical work getting the sensor in good contact with the diode.
 





id be in for 2. but a i got a few questions, im new to the driver stuff :)

1. Can this driver be set at any current under 2 amps?
2. I have no idea how to set current so how do you?
3. Is shipping included in price?

Yes but they come preset.
They use a low value resistor.
i can set them but the average user will not be able to change the current.
Shipping is not included, especially shipping out side the us.
Just let me know what current you want and i will try to get it close.
the forumla is simple
100/current = resistor
(100/1500= 0.066ohm)
So as you can tell the resistor is a very low value.
The diode temp monitor will take a bit of time but is doable.
but once tripped it may take around 20min for the laser to turn back on.
This is still perfect for the average noob, but could be annoying for some more advance users.

Anyway, I was looking at making my own STCS1 drivers (I usually don't push 445s higher than 1.5A anyway, so why would I need another?) and I came to the realization that using a thermistor for thermal shut off wouldn't work, because the shutdown pin doesn't work on current, it works on voltage... and the current necessary is TINY. So you would need a thermal transistor, if they exist... because you just need to cut off the VOLTAGE.
 
you can use a thermistor in a voltage divider setup to cut the voltage.
The stcs1a, is a good chip i got 50 sitting on my desk but i wanted the 2a version first.
before the months end.
If someone who has eagle want to throw the board together i will send it off to have it made.

I dont sell these to make much of a profit. but any one who designs a chip that using anything from st micro i can produce for much cheaper than anyone else.
Plus who ever designs it gets them fore free with limits.
idk i have gotten much better at eagle so i might just make the stcs1a version tonight.
The question now is 1 or 2 chip board.
2 chips would be 3a max.

VDROP Dropout voltage (VDRAIN to GND)
IO = 100 mA 0.12 - 0.16V
IO = 2 A 0.58- 0.9V
The max and worst case the vdrop will only be .9
But in most cases and when being driven at 1.5 it will be around or less than .5
 
I guess you need to adhere to the worst case scenario for real world applications though - not that 0.9v drop is a bad figure at all. Its probably attractive for powering high powered 445s and 405s from 2 lithium cells as those 0.9 volts fit the gap very well.
 
true, but thats at 2A, so for 1.6A the v drop worst case would be less.
Way better than the lm317 or the lm117 they have a vdrop total after circuit of 2.45V
