New Intel Heatsink 4 labby from astrotoo

Mendelson's here in Dayton, Ohio. That's just 1 row, of about 12 on 1 story. But theres 3 stories with 12 rows of anything you can think of electronic.

Wow... you could get seriously lost in there :)

I'll keep an eye on progress with these heatsinks - they sure seem massive enough to be interesting :)
 





My two cents after having recently drilled a hole for press fit Aixiz module in the 1366 copper center heat sink . . .

The all aluminum sinks are going to be much easier to machine for the module . . . copper requires slow going as not to jam or gall the cutting tool . . .

Also the Aixiz module is not completey true at the threaded end making it a tough fit for a perfectly round hole such as created by a high tolerance boring tool

About an hour by hand with some emory cloth fixed that.

Pretty sure the i7 920 1366 sink is some sort of copper nickel alloy . . .

Nice enough :)

I'd suggest making the central hole a bit larger though, so insertion is easly, and then remove one or two the fin sets to allow room for a set screw. With some thermal compound performance wouldn't be degraded thast much, but installation would be much easier.

Tolerances on aixiz modules are just too large to assume they will simply fit. One might just slide in without effort, while another needs firm pressure using a vise or something similar to get it installed at all.

Not that these tolerances are that wide, but when installing something like this, 0.05 mm is the difference between a loose fit and something that requires brute force.
 
yeah I don't care for $10 . . . it's like 11.94 at the small end and was about 12.15 on the threaded end . . .

It's perfect for a light press fit with some compound now . . . good finger effort required
 
Nice equipment your friend has there.. we spent less than 20 min. drilling the Al with GreenMechanics drill press. Quite soft and Got lucky and the fit was just snug enough to agree it needs no set screws. Thanks for the posts and info- and those great photos-- Check DieselMarine's thread on another good labby build too, his has two fans.

yes it is! I went there when I went to the Dayon hamfest and its awesome... but I can drive to astrotoo a lot easier from Miami than I can drive to Ohio ;)

its really sad that places like this are a dying breed
 
I may have missed it while reading all the entries on this, but did you mention the overall diameter of that 'sink ? I just wondered how big it was. Thanks, & nice find !!!
 
I just want to bump this and say what a wonderfull idea.
Most people who are into computers will have a few of these coolers lying around already.

I am pondering though. Could it be even better drilling it to fit the 5.6mm diode directly with a tapped bore for a standard colminator lense-set in front? That way it becomes the structural element of the unit as well as reduce the number of thermal boundries in the setup.
 
I have 12 of these brand new with copper centers that I need to get rid of (no holes in center). PM me for info

Those should be good for up to 60w with the temps we require? Especially if one could get ahold of a M9x0.5 tap bit and make the lens/diode fit directly.
