I picked up these from Mitch 'Astrotoo'(LPF name) in Melbourne Fl-- they come with a 12 vdc .42A fan and I think they are made for a cpu.

'GreenM' Mark T drilled one for me-using his drill press- he made a small pilot hole in the center and then went to a 12 mm drll bit and took his time with oil to keep it cool. Due to the delicate nature of those thin fins it was just held by hand.

PM Mitch(astrotoo) to get total cost -- He has a large inventory and as usual the larger the order the better the bargain(combined shipping). He has access to literally tons of items, both new and used pulls. 5 stars to Mitch-thnx

That looks like a great way to cool an Aixiz Module...
But you will need a fan to blow the heat away...
Those fins are so close together that it will be hard
to transfer the heat to ambient air without a fan... IMO

That could be why that fan is sitting right next to it... :p I assume it's not there for looks.

OP--'I picked up these from Mitch at Astrotoo in Melbourne Fl-- they come with a 12 vdc .42A fan and I think they are made for a cpu."I

I removed the fans to allow access for drilling-- they all have new fans attached at four points. I considered ordering a dozen and drilling them out for AixiZ and Green modules to sell -- but no time. Somebody should go for it. I am sure they are cheaper by the dozen--tell em Hak sent you-- but he will sell to you anyway--ha ha

Below see what is on the monitor at Astrotoo and a shot of one aisle at Mitch's -- one of 15 or more -- like being inside of an electronics catalogue.

That is a massive heatsink, you would run that for days!!!

Throw a couple of pelts in there and the laser might just explode the moon!

Nice find!

:thanks:
I will run a LCC & phr in it and see the temp differance:eg:.

But if the fan sits under or behind the heatsink would it not be better for the fan to pull the air down?? away from the module and thru the fins?? might also help to keep dust from the module.. But what do i know??:shhh: BTW This heat sink is exactly the same length of a aixiz module. Flush at both ends.

Yea that makes sense- I think that is the way it comes anyway--my plan was to use them on thier sides . add dichro= 300+mWs of magenta. I should have gotten more while I was in Florida.

How do you attach the aixiz module to this? Did he somehow get a set-screw hole drilled in the side?

Thse seem to be cpu heatsinks... and require a lot of work to fit nomral modules.

^^^ Ben-I said that they were CPU HSs--and -really Not a lot of work-

-Mark drilled mine out in 15 min. used a small drill for first hole and a 12mm for the final-(keep dripping oil on the drill)-

set screws could be added from the front at an angle but I just added a dab of thermal paste -spread out to a thin layer and slid a very thin copper shim into it and since it is a labby where is it going to go??

you could also drill it out a tad smaller than the module-wrap some 1 inch wide emory cloth around a drill bit that allows room for it and slowly sand out the hole til it fits snugly.

NOTE be sure to remove ALL Al dust/oil before adding a module with lens or diode--very important. when sanding out the HS I just use an old module back and a dead greenie(smaller than an aixiz module) that I keep around just for that purpose.

btw if you take a common FM radio antenna apart you will find many copper pieces that make good shims-free

If you want to contact Mitch about these heatsinks PM him via LPF--he will know which ones you want if you refer him to this thread--he has hundreds of different HSs

peace---Hak

Well, if they are available with a pre-drilled aixiz sized hole in them, they would seem great to me.

As for using the fan: It will surely lower thermal resistance even further, but these things seem so massive that cooling 1 watt dissipation should be no problem at all without the fan, even if mounted sideways.

I could take some measurements for the K/W performance with and without the fan, but i'm quite sure it will be adequate without as long as there is some space for air to convect around it.

If you like that place then this is heaven. Notice how you can barely see the counter at the end of the row.

Mendelson's here in Dayton, Ohio. That's just 1 row, of about 12 on 1 story. But theres 3 stories with 12 rows of anything you can think of electronic.

Thanks for that Ben

the fan might help keep the driver cool if that is needed.

Once I get caught up on projects I may offer some predrilled for 12mm and 11.9mm. PM me.. anyone interested.
