The rechargable CR2s end up having 3.6V at full charge. Not sure how long it lasts like that though.

What combination are you talking about? 3V rechargable Li-Fe-POs have 3.6V at full charge. 3.6V rechargable Li-Ions have 4.2V at full charge. And a 317 driver needs 6V OR MORE to drive a red diode. It wouldn't work from two 3V rechargables, because they lose the little something above 3V very fast. Only two 3.6V rechargables stay above 6V over their entire capacity - 8.4V when full, 6V when empty, so you have constant current over the entire range with a 317.

Not sure what lasts like that? The original driver/diode combo? That depends on if it's current regulated or not. No one has confirmed it so far, and i've only been told a couple measurements, so i ordered my own, just to figure it out.

His diode is dead, so i was explaining the driver possibilities for when he puts an open can in. The 3V rechargables with 3.6V when full are ok with the original laser tho.

that diode looks like one of the mitsubishi/phazor diodes in there.

How can you tell? To me it just looks like a regular diode with the legs ripped off.


BTW: I just got this laser and did some measurements.

The "driver" is not really all that good at regulating the current. If someone should decide to use this host for a different diode, i would suggest going with a 317 driver and two 3.6V rechargable CR2s. NOT the green ones from DX! Those are 3V. But the green ones might work with the rckstr driver or the FlexDrive with an additional diode.

If you swap the driver, make sure to fix it to the head well, so the batteries don't put any stress on the diode legs.

regular diodes have flat base. this one has a circular 'island' that protrudes slightly above. i found a diode like that in the 6x blu-ray burner. it is canned, its can is longer than standard cans, though, so is the die.
