What combination are you talking about? 3V rechargable Li-Fe-POs have 3.6V at full charge. 3.6V rechargable Li-Ions have 4.2V at full charge. And a 317 driver needs 6V OR MORE to drive a red diode. It wouldn't work from two 3V rechargables, because they lose the little something above 3V very fast. Only two 3.6V rechargables stay above 6V over their entire capacity - 8.4V when full, 6V when empty, so you have constant current over the entire range with a 317.
Not sure what lasts like that? The original driver/diode combo? That depends on if it's current regulated or not. No one has confirmed it so far, and i've only been told a couple measurements, so i ordered my own, just to figure it out.
His diode is dead, so i was explaining the driver possibilities for when he puts an open can in. The 3V rechargables with 3.6V when full are ok with the original laser tho.
