That driver does get HOT! You can easily burn yourself...
About the lens being wobbly.. The first version used a triple element glass lens in a metal nut. I have some of those lenses and they are always wobbly.. The new version uses an AR coated acrylic in a plastic lens nut, which sits tight. The new lens also lets more power through, than the triple element glass. That one is designed for better beam distortion properties, not so much for power.. With three different lenses, they achieve similar properties as with much more expensive aspheric lenses, at the cost of some power.
The new acrylic lens projects a weird ring if used without the big head.. The big head blocks these distortions..
Here is a simulation of a triple element glass lens (made by Phenol). As you can see, all the beams are parallel.
With spherical lenses, some of the beams at the edge always go off to the side (- distortions).
That first "square" lens is a Grin lens, that diffracts light by changing properties in the material, instead of whith shape (the diffraction index of the material increased from the center outwards).
