Having recently gotten more 6x sleds, I decided that it was time to make a 6x handheld from brass. Brass is a nice material to work with, I've made a lot of lens nuts and such from it. I already have two 6x in aluminum hosts, so I was ready to try something different. For power, I decided on 3 x CR2 3V rechargeables, which still allows a reasonably small laser. The driver is 1117 based, surface mount, and sits next to the diode in the head. Drive current is set at 270mA. The output is 280mW. Lens is an aixiz 405 glass in a custom lens nut. No aixiz housing is used, the parts of the host are all custom machined brass.

This laser burns very nicely and has a solid heft to it. The brass gives it some weight. Certainly made a nice laser for my 405th post. :yh: I like brass lasers, perhaps I should put some o-like green modules and LPC's into brass hosts.

Bill.

I like it alot ( in a special short bus way)

seriously .. the brass gives it solid look

too bad you dont sell your works

Thats really nice looking, and ill bet it weighs a lot more than what it looks like it does.

Gryphon - Yes this laser has a nice heft to it. Feels solid in the hand. It weighs 185 grams loaded with batteries and ready to go.

Arenared, iskor12 - Thanks for the encouragement!

One word: Sexy.

It's got an "executive" look to it. I'd definitely use a lower-powered one for presentations.

you make these hosts yourself? or get someone to do it?

pretty neat, i'm assuming you used a GGW diode? i woner how long it iwll last at 270mA.

i wanna play with it :( to date about as high as i've gone with blu-ray is prob around 180mW (6x @200mA with acrylic.)

Mohrenberg - I machine the hosts myself. A GGW diode was used. When I tested this particular diode before making the laser, I had it running at higher currents. The output just kept increasing. I stopped at 330mA. To make the diode last a little longer, I chose to run it at 270mA. This laser only has about two hours of use so far. The batteries only last about 90 minutes but I have lots.
