need help with the laser kit i bought noobie here!

Re: need help with the laser kit i bought noobie h

ok eku, ive read it thoughly but mine is all completley disassembled, and i have never soldered before :-/ and i dont want to mess up my diode or the laser. how would i solder and how would i have a bit of practice?
ps advise me on soldering irons and wire and which gauge wire i should get ?
sorry for bad spelling

Re: need help with the laser kit i bought noobie h

seen as the laser diode is very sensitive to heat and all how would i solder a wire to that??
plz help you can see really how newby i am at these things?

hmm wrong idea of starting to solder with these components, first try to practice with some cheap red diodes, if you mess those up, it isn't that expensive if they are dead.
Why didnt you just buy some of the pre assembled 120mW lasers from Mohrenberg or jake21? I think they are (at resp 75$ and 60$) cheaper than the kit you bought

Re: need help with the laser kit i bought noobie h

There might be some people here that would be willing to build it for you.

Re: need help with the laser kit i bought noobie h

start with a 25watt solder iron with a super fine tip. use a good solder also. I use rosin cored. I also use 22gauge tin coated wire. a good way to solder is to pre-solder all your connections first. But i recommend practicing on different componets first or cutting strips of wire and striping the ends and practice pre soldering those till you feel comfortable. Also if possible get a gadget call "helping hands". it will hold your pieces while you solder.

what the hell is a tritium vial??? i want one!.....

wow those kits are expensive....

is the diode already in an aixiz module?
is the driver pre-set?

its like a tiny glow stick lol,and yes that sure is one expensive kit :o

Tritium is a radioactive material that lets of light when it decays. It can glow for 10 years or more without any stimulation of any sort... all on it's own. In this case, they are using a vial of it to mark the host of the laser, probably so you can find it in the dark, but mostly because it looks cool.

Here's a good soldering tutorial I found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLfXXRfRIzY

You might want to browse around youtube or metacafe for a bit and watch a few tutorials before you get started. I'd also try soldering bits of scrap wire together until you're comfortable with the process and you're confident you can do it right on the first try. Never hold your iron to any component for more than 5 seconds or you risk killing it.

You can also check out the tutorials on sparkfun.com. They're more oriented towards complicated surface mount soldering, but I think they're so well made you might be able to pick up a few tips for basic soldering as well.

The tritium vials are those insert that jayrob is selling thay just glow a little.

ya i second you practicing soldering on other stuff first to get the hang of it and a feel for how solder flows. good luck.

i couldnt buy those coz australian customs would confiscate them

Re: need help with the laser kit i bought noobie h

i dont want to just stick a iron on a diode because i have heard stories on these forum s of them burning :o :o

i dont know if its preset or anything?
i have put it in the axisz(something like that) housing by putting the bottom of the housing and pressing onto the lense bit by a clamp. is that good enough.
i ill sen pictures if someone wants them so you can help me further

Re: need help with the laser kit i bought noobie h

sorry to be the negative nancy. I tried to send you in the right direction. You don't seem to have even a basic knowledge of lasers. :'( There are soooooooo many stickies you really should read first. you don't want to ruin that expensive kit. instead of reading the replies on this thread you should be searching the WHOLE forum. ;)
