I'm going to make a new laser and trying to decide on what diode to use. I want to use either a "3W 9mm 445nm" or one of the new "2W m462" Would the m462 appear as bright as the 3W 445nm because of its higher wavelength? Is the color of 462nm noticeably different than a 445nm diode? I already have a 2W m140 diode and don't know if the 462nm would be that different.

Side by side I can definitely see the color difference between 445nm vs 462nm
I don't believe it will be brighter because that is a full 1W difference vs a 17nm difference. Of course the beam shape and divergence plays part in it also.
Are you mainly shooting for power or a different color? IMHO I would go with the 2W m462 since you already have the 2W m140
What host are you going with?

If your talking about a NDB7875 then it will not look much different than a M-140, just a little brighter, but the 462 is very noticeably brighter in COLOR, if you really want a WOW then check out the NUBM07E, it is a little more divergent, but the power is twice that of your m-140 and the brightness and color is a real WOW moment when you fire it up.
At 3.5 amps you will get around 4.25 watts out, there is a thread on it with graphs.

The 07E is my favorite color now, sky blue is very cool in a laser. Thanks for the photo RedCowboy, someone rep him please, the system won't let me do so right now.

Hi Slayer,
Go with the 462nm instead of the NDB7875/445nm it's a big difference in color and it's super bright to. The 7875's are like old school with all the newer diode that came out. I have 2 builds with the 462 and i love them hands dow than the 445nm 9mm. You won't be disappointed really. And instead of a m140/445 don't bother the PLTB450B is a more efficient diode truthfully i don't even look at the m140's anymore. I'm spoiled with the PLTB450B's awesome dye . And if you want to kick it up a knoch get your self a 465nm . I have one build set to 4.5 or 5A and it kicks butt and the WL is SICK !! 470nm easy Pal.

You guys sold me, I'm going to get the NUBM07E LOL. Just wondering if I can use the same gauge wiring as i did for <1.8A lasers. Will I be okay with 3.5-4.0A with the same wires?

Hi When i built mine i used a lager dia. wire /silicon much better choice than the normal used. And the shorter the better always in my opinion.

For the wires it depends on the quality really. There are some pretty horrible wires out there, things with dupont connectors or even croc clips on them that are as a bad as 1 ohm a foot.

I've made the mistake of using those in high current applications. The wires didn't melt or anything like that, but i lost a volt in a 7.4 volt powered circuit and i took the effort of actually measuring the drop across the wires to realise what was going on there - i never would have thought that those wires were all plastic and just a few minute strands of copper by handling them.

If you actually go through cutting, stripping and soldering wires you'll probably notice low quality wire like that instantly, but if it comes with connectors or clips fitted, beware!

^^ Very good info Benm. I have ran into that before.
Also with car jumper wires. The cables looked heavy/thick but the copper gauge itself was small! :(

Like i said when i built my 465nm I used aSXD with a long ramp up. But i used a good quality 22AWG. silicon coated wire. Here is a pic of some gauges..Her you can see the difference in thickness.

I was going to get an SXB-2. Does it have a good ramp up? I am putting this on a momuntary side switch howt so it mau ne turned on and off frequently.

SXD is the way to go 100% Heavier gauge wire to . The ramp up feature is awesome for the life of the diode. You Have a host with a momentary switch, So you will have to hold it down . Some folks like them i guess for safety reasons i don"t know.. I don't have any all my builds are latching switches. On your host you just have to keep it pressed , but does the same thing overall No Problem. Lazereer upon request if you order from him will upgrade the wire gauge. Most likely he will suggest it also, great guy to deal with when it comet drivers he's the go to guy. On great builds it doesn't pay to skimp really . Oh almost forgot he's right on the east coast in Conn.So shipping is quick considering he's not swamped with orders.

Wait so I cant just press the switch willy nilly for short durations? And i was planning on getting the boost driver not the buck driver I want to run this off of one cell.
