Mythbusters is popping corn with a laser.

And MB does some STUPID things safety wise. Yeah, "don't try this at home" and all, but any scientist in any respectable lab would be fired on the spot for doing some of the stupid things they do. I recall Jamie holding a hydrogen tank in one hand, with a rubber hose connected to it in the other, feeding the hydrogen into the open carburetor of a car WHILE IT WAS RUNNING. And then he looked surprised when the hose/hydrogen output CAUGHT ON FIRE and he was suddenly holding a flame thrower that was maybe a second or 2 from becoming a very big explosion.

Even neglecting the shear stupidity it takes to do something like that in the first place, he never even handled the tank properly at all, even if he was going to be using it in a correct manner. Seriously, I do ANY of the stupid things he did, and I get thrown out of the lab for life. The tank is not secured in any way, it could fall over at any time, there is no pressure regulator on the tank output, he's using ELECTRICAL TAPE to hold the hose on, he rolls the tank over there on it's corner instead of using a safe, grounded, secured cart of any kind. The list goes on and on! Here's a video of the beginning of this low point of the show. This only shows the first part of his attempts. Notice at the end he's about to say "let's do this again", and when they do it again, that's when the hose output catches fire, I couldn't find that part of the clip. They are not scientists, they build movie/TV props. I've worked with all types of gas and have never seen a grounding cart. Even the gas distributor doesn't. They roll everything. Keep in mind its only a TV show. Its for entertainment, not solid science experiments.

The gas cylinder delivery company doesn't use these, or something similar? :wtf: You need to get a new gas cylinder delivery company if they are rolling compressed flammable gas cylinders on their sides like Jamie does in that clip. For that matter, I'd be alerting the company that their employees are mishandling cylinders at your place of business. Although I suppose it may not be standard for the carts to grounded in many environments, it wouldn't make sense in a lot of cases. But the fact remains, cylinders should be secured to cart for moving, and secured completely to prevent them from falling over while in use.

And I don't care if they're scientists or not, those actions were idiotic at best. They could be pastry chefs on the Food Network for all I care, it was still stupid. ETA: But I do understand it's for entertainment purposes only, not for real science. And I'm sure a lot of people on the internet would be extremely entertained by a hydrogen cylinder exploding and blowing a car and several people all to hell.

I never debated it was not stupid. The first thing I noticed was that there was not a regulator on the tank.

I've worked with steel in form or another my whole life and have always seen people rolling tanks. Even AirGas employees.
 
It is a few years since I was in a company workshop but when I was the welders always used to roll the tanks. In the labs they used a bottle cart...I always assumed it was to stop them marking the lab floor as much as anything.:whistle:

Hmm, I've seen delivery guys from Airgas roll the tanks. I was a little surprised. What would it take for them to explode?
 
Maybe if rolled across a carpet there might be issues, but I don't think cement, blacktop, wood, or tile would generate much static. I used to carry them on my shoulder when the hoses didn't reach the floor we were on.

From what I found on the web, there must be a leak first.
 
Mythbusters did an episode on what happens if you drop a bottle and knock the valve off.... hang on, we have gone full circle:)
