I think UVB is the one that is most damaging, UVC is blocked by skin IIRC. Either way you should send it to Switch so he can prove his "cancer ray" theory.

That is the most impressive diode! ;D Try shining it through sunglasses.Try different cameras, try putting the sunglasses over the camera! :D Send it to someone that could do a specral analisys in the UV part of the spectrum, and has a well callibrated thermal meter  :-/ Can it burn? at least smoke black tape when focused? How hard does it fluoresce stuff compared to a 100mW violet? :-/ Definetly be REALLY carefull and don't point it at your skin!! You know, cancer-ray. ::)

UVC is absorbed by the skin, and is Ionizing, so it gets absorbed into your skin and ionizes the DNA in your skin and causes the skin cells to go out of control. UVB is not ionizing, and so, the risk of damage is much less.

anyhow, I have a
well calibrated thermal meter
and I guess switch has a umm, something related to measuring UV light.

Your aquarium water is fluorescing a white/blue color, and that is what is breaking up into the rainbow.  
I've got a 150mw b.r., and you can sort of see the beam, but when it goes through the aquarium water, the beam is intensely bright, light blue.
I've got a big 240 gallon aquarium, and probably shine lasers into my fishes world far more often than I should!

Edit- i just read the original aquarium/rainbow post a little more slowly, and noticed he said he figured out it was something fluorescing.  I still say it's the water, tho.  I can get that effect w/out getting too close to the silicone edge.  

While I'm sort of off topic...  another cool thing w/ the aquarium is to get your brightest laser, (~350mw red in my case) and have it unfocused to a big foot round circle of light.  Aim a pump at the water to make it somewhat ripply.  Shine the laser at an angle up through the front glass and reflect the laser off the surface of the water, back onto the wall behind the aquarium. (sheesh.. this is harder to explain than it really is..  maybe I'll get a photo of the effect and post it in the appropriate area)  
well, anyway... it makes really cool wave patterns o the wall behind the aquarium.

small update:

the PHY dept have kept the laser for measurements. they say its dangerous to eyes as its emitting an unknown amount of UV light.

They are unable at the moment to measure the power as their meter doesnt read uv?

anyways t hey can keep it and im pissed with them fro breakign my scanner.
 
We have "405nm" diodes that have tested all the way up to 415nm. Why shouldn't they also go down to 395nm? This is probably just a blu-ray lasing at an extreme end of the "range" of the diode.

You know that you can use a diffraction grating to determin the wavelength. Just compare it to a bluray diode in the same setup and based on how far to the left or right of the dot of the bluray you can determine it's exact wavelength.
 
oh man, too bad :( But how bright was it compared to a bluray (the fluorescence that is), if you had abluray to compare it with. :P
 
I just wanted to say that the rainbow you observed is just the light that is emitted from the things that fluorescence from you blueray laser. For instance things in the water, the glass usw. Because of the prism like effect from your aquarium, it seperates the different wavelenghts...

Did anyone ever look through a diffraction grating at their lasers dot? If you look at a green dot on a wall, it looks green. Red stays red. Violet stays violet. But as soon as you point you violet laser on something that fluorescences, you are able to see the spectrum of the light that is emitted...

yup im letting them keep it. Apparently their meters wont read anything lower than 400nm and they think its as someone else said a defective BR laser.

They usually use a single slit diffraction pattern to accurately measure lasers but as this is invisible they cant. and diffraction by other methods cant work....

they are looking into other ways but they essentially say its V dangerous.

have just paid for a BR now! hopefully will be visible this time......
 
diffraction onto a fluorescent or glowing surface.. that should show the invisible lines
 
Heh...a defective BR , right....I bet people would kill for that one "defective" diode. :D I bet they're saying that it's dangerous so they can keep it.What can you expect from the people that fubard your spiroscanner? ::) Shouldn't've let them have it :P
