I now have two new 532nm 50mW greenies. About bloody time too.

The beams are well cool, but I am easially impressed   ::). I'll take a few pics later.

However, one of the laser beams could be collimated better. I have taken a look at the 'pen style' housing but it seems to be spot welded together  :-?.

I am sure that I have read an artical on here somewhere that showed you how to take a pointer apart without using a hammer ;D but I can't seem to find it now.
I'd like to take the laser apart so I can adjust the lens myself to focus the beam better.

If that can't be done, is there a lens that I can buy from somewhere that fits over the end of the pointer, and can then be turned to focus the beam?

are they like DX style pointers? If so the focus is pretty much set, if not you may be able to adjust it
 
Yup, the traditional DX style pointers. The front cap is pretty difficult to take off, it's glued on so you will most likely scratch the laser if you want to get it off. It can be done though.
 
If you take the pointer and sandwich the silver cap on the front (with the aperture hole in it) between two flat pieces of wood in a vise (to protect the finish), then you should be able to twist and rock pointer to get the cap off. this will expose the laser module inside. You'll need to unscrew the module from the cap to be able to turn the lens assembly in order to focus it.
 
Take a piece of wood and drill a hole that fits the cap and make a groove with a saw. Then use a screw to tighten it, and then twist the thing off. It might work, I dunno.

I'll give it a go, but failing that, I'll see if I can get myself a len setup that will fit over the end, then adjust the beams focus that way.
 
When I disassembled a broken pointer just like those, I used a vise that was secured to a workbench. It'll take a fair amount of muscle to get the cap off, but it will come off. To replace it, you'll need to drive it in with a rubber hammer or a hammer and a piece of wood to put between the cap and the hammer.
 
All these techniques are a recipe for disaster ;D ;D ;D

Ok I have the silver end off but the LD and it's lens are too far down to reach.

Is there a way to get the LD and driver out in one bit?
Also, when the switch is pushed down hard the beam gets brighter, so I have a feeling the switch contacts might not be working too well either.

I'd like to get the whole 'guts' out and place it into a torch host.

Any ideas?
 
Some glue will loosen a lot with heat from a hair drier blower!  the module was likely pushed in from one end or the other, don't break the driver board by pushing on it from the battery end.  Good Luck, these are often quite challenging!   I usually try to return units I don't want, RMA is easier!!!  -Glenn
 
most mod attempts like this end in disaster, maybe a spare pen module if your lucky, but a lot of the time this earns you a one way ticket to the nearest trash can
